Thursday, November 12, 2009 Announced in August 2009, 'Doodle 4 Google-My India' saw its final ceremony today at the Taj Ambassador Hotel, New Delhi. During the colourful award ceremony, Google awarded the first-ever young doodler for India on the basis of 'innovation and creativity'. Puru Pratap Singh, a 4th standard student from Gurgaon (NCR), was declared the winner of the competition. His doodle entitled "My India - Full of Life" was chosen from over 4,000 doodles submitted by students across the country,

Google's Doodle 4 Google 'My India' theme allowed students to create a doodle for Google by giving a pictorial depiction of what India means to them.

Puru's doodle amazed almost everyone at the event. Explaining his doodle, Puru said, "G represents the peacock, 'O' the wisdom of our country, the second 'O' symbolises the water found on Moon and formula of this 'OH', 'G' represents the crown of India that is Kashmir, 'L' the Amar Jawan Jyoti and 'E' represents the values of Gandhiji."

The winning doodle will appear on the Google homepage on 14 November 2009 (with Puru's name). Dennis Hwang, a creator of Google's first doodles, elaborated, "The doodle will appear with Puru's name as we want to give the full credit to the creator of this doodle." Puru will also receive a laptop computer, a t-shirt with his doodle and a Rs 1,00,000 technology grant for his school.

Mahatma Gandhi was the clear inspiration for students to make their doodles, as all the top three winners' doodle pictured 'Gandhiji'. Both the first and second runners-up -- Haadiyah Afridi, 1st standard stdent from Bhopal, and 8th standard student from Nashik Riya B Jadhav -- depicted Mahatma Gandhi holding a stick in his hand. Both the doodles were quite similar. Disappointed with the runner-up position, Riya Jadhav said, "I am very happy that my doodle is amongst the top three but I expected the first position. I am a little bit disappointed with the result."

"At Google we like to play! 'Doodle4Google' symbolises that playful spirit of Google and is a celebration of creativity and in this case, of India. We are excited to present the results of India's first edition of this contest and laud the young Indian doodlers who have showcased their wonderful creativity in the form of inspiring doodles that represent the various facets of India," stated Shailesh Rao, managing director, Google India.

'Doodles' are creative Google logos that appear on some special days, to commemorate scientific and artistic achievements, historic or seasonal events, and other local occasions. For over a decade, Google has been designing innovative logos called 'Doodles' for its homepage and Dennis Hwang, the master doodler, has been driving this innovation.
