With people increasingly buying smaller machines, the mountains of PC waste created by junked PCs poses a serious health hazard, say scientists at a British university.

Thursday, March 11, 2010:
With the growing popularity of netbooks and laptop computers, desktop PCs and bigger machines are slowly seeing themselves fade away into the dustheap of technology, but are leaving behind a major headache. Researchers at Nottingham University Business School have warned that the urge to upgrade to new computers has resulted in an avalanche of electronic waste, something which is fast turning out to become an environmental time bomb, reports the Telegraph.

Experts believe that around 2.5 billion usable PCs will be needlessly scrapped by 2013. They squarely pin the blame on 'lazy' software developers who create programmes with extra processing power than required, which lead to users buying machines with more memory tailored for modern computing demands. "The principal solution to the problem of PC e-waste is for developers and marketers to stop using strategies that contribute to bloat and enforced upgrading," said Professor Peter Swann, innovation and sustainability expert, Nottingham University Business School.
Most software makers pay computer vendors to pre-install their software on new machines. Professor Swann blamed this "bloatware", and certain computer programmes that employ rarely-used features which eat into the processing power, for the problem.
Discarded computers are generally shipped to Asia, Latin America and Africa for recycling, but last month the UN expressed its concerns about the growing mountains of e-waste that overflow landfill sites in the developing world.
