Monday, March 15, 2010:
More than a hundred teams taking part in the 20th Rally ‘Aïcha des Gazelles’ of Morocco will be measuring their car emissions for the first time. The aim is to measure carbon gas emissions in real time and use the data in rewarding responsible teams for their eco-conduct.

Rally cars will be equipped with Logica’s emissions monitoring device, EMO. EMO measures and reports the emissions a vehicle is responsible for. It was recently recognized by "The Economist" as one of 10 game changing solutions to combat climate change. The team with the best EMO index will receive a special trophy from Logica.
Monitoring emissions at the all women rally is a new initiative and one that is planned to continue in forthcoming years. It aims to make the 2011 event the first global sportive tournament to take into account the CO2 emissions within its sporting criteria.
Commenting on the event and Logica’s role, Jean Marc Lazzari, CEO, France, said, “Using EMO during the rally will help gather data that will emphasize the importance of driving behaviour and its impact on lowering global carbon emissions. We are convinced that the efforts in terms of environmental responsibility should be born by all: corporates, citizens and Government. We all have a role to play to permanently reduces carbon emissions.”
This year the special Logica trophy will be awarded to three teams that emit the least CO2 during the competition. The teams’ green classification can be followed on the internet everyday, from the websites www.rallyeaichadesgazelles.com and www.logica.com
Talking about the importance of measuring individual carbon emissions, GBS Bindra, Global innovation Director, Logica, said, “By using EMO in the Rally ‘Aïcha des Gazelles’, we are clearly demonstrating its role in helping drivers be more aware of the impact of their actions on the environment. It will also help society move towards a system that rewards behaviour that helps reduce carbon emissions. To become a society less dependent on carbon energy sources, we must create a new economic model; and the only way we can really make a change is to reward people for being green.”
The Rally ‘Aïcha des Gazelles’ takes place in Morocco from 13-16 March 2010.
