Saturday, September 04, 2010:
As many as 41,000 laptops have been recalled by Toshiba worldwide because of a fire risk, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Thursday. “Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product,” the commission said in a notice.

The computers involved are from Toshiba’s T130 Satellite line-up -- the Satellite T135, Satellite T135D and Satellite ProT130.
"The notebook computers can overheat at the notebook's plug-in to the AC adapter, posing a burn hazard to consumers," the commission said.
Toshiba is said to have received 129 reports of the notebook computers overheating and deforming the plastic casing area around the AC adapter plug, including two reports of minor burn injuries that did not require medical attention and two reports of minor property damage.
The company mentioned on its website: "Certain Satellite T135, T135D and Satellite Pro T130 laptop computers have been manufactured with a potentially faulty DC-In harness. These computers will have model/part numbers beginning with PST3AU, PST3BU, or PST3LU. The defective harness may, in some circumstances, overheat to the point of melting the computer's base at the location where the AC adapter plugs into the unit...To protect you from injury and your computer from damage, Toshiba strongly recommends that you update your system BIOS to version to 2.70 for the Satellite T135, 1.90 for the Satellite T135D and 2.70 for the Satellite Pro T130."
If you are concerned that your Toshiba laptop may be on the list, you should immediately download the latest version of Toshiba's BIOS computer programme, to detect whether the machine is overheating. If so, you should disable its external power supply and contact Toshiba for a free repair.
Consumers who do not have Internet access should contact Toshiba at (800) 457-7777 to arrange for installation of the updated BIOS.
