counts among its three major products its quality checking fixtures and jigs along with sheetmetal vehicle body parts and metal stamping dies.
Ogihara Corp. has been manufacturing metal stamping parts and dies for more than 50 years for car manufacturers. Globally the car manufacturing market has been changing drastically and hence the time taken on design & production has to be shortened. Ogihara Corp. needs to focus in more detail on its product development cycle in order to meet its customers demand. The company has been using ThinkDesign as its key 3D CAD software especially within its Quality Checking Fixture section.
Mr. Junichi Iizuka, Chief Machining Section comments “It was not an easy job to switch from 2D to 3D in the design process” he further states “prior to working on ThinkDesign, the staff members were comfortable working on a 2D platform and were hesitant to switch to 3D. The biggest challenge was to convince them of the effectiveness of changing to 3D and how ThinkDesign could benefit and ease their work” Most of them were expert 2D CAD users who were unwilling to move out of their accustomed 2D environment. Hence the first thing Ogihara Corp. did was to utilize 3D CAD among the factory employees. For this purpose, Mr. Iizuka decided to switch its key 3D CAD from other vendors to ThinkDesign. Thanks to ThinkDesign’s ease of use, the excellent process of switching from 2D to 3D accelerated around 2004. Thus as a result, a number of 2D documents used in the factory had been decreased. The quality of job today is a multiplier effect, as 3D data flows downstream and the total process has become extremely efficient. It also means that low value added jobs have been eliminated. Ogihara Corp. could achieve its demanding objectives by saving its design time.
The other good thing brought in by ThinkDesign was, launching a brand new product. “3D models made by ThinkDesign could be used directly in the manufacturing process which gives us the capability of making products with new raw materials."Kneading Material Epoxy Resin" gives higher accuracy than existing products which is made by blocks. Now, we can offer choices depending on the required accuracy” states Mr. Shinichi Chiba, Chief of the Quality Checking Fixture Section, manufacturing department.
A key feature from ThinkDesign is its API environment that worked in saving the Design time. Mr. Shinya Takatou who is in charge of customization of ThinkDesign states “with 5-days of API training, I was able to make necessary customization at the plant, not only to combine existing functions, but original plug-in functions too. With ThinkDesign API it’s possible to customize functions which are essential only for designing quality checking fixtures that could be easily reachable by users. The tool is very effective to maximize efficiency of total process too”.
The results achieved with ThinkDesign within Ogihara’s Quality Checking Fixtures section have been enormous. The department has reduced by 50% its time on the product design process. This great result occurred thanks to their effort to adopt, ThinkDesign as its key 3D CAD which covers the entire product design process of quality checking fixtures.
