EMC Corporation, the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced findings of the IDC Digital Universe Study, sponsored by EMC, 20101, titled "The Digital Universe in India” and its key initiatives to address customer challenges associated with the digital information deluge.

The study revealed that over the next decade (2010 to 2020), digital information in India will grow from 40,000 petabytes to 2.3 million petabytes, twice as fast as the worldwide rate.
To help address customers’ increasing challenges to store, protect and manage ever- growing digital information , EMC is rolling out its private cloud strategy in India and forging industry partnerships locally and globally to help customers move quickly toward private cloud computing environments and acquire new levels of agility, efficiency and control; expanding Global Services operations to address large enterprise requirements; and broadening its product portfolio to cover the entire spectrum of enterprise, SMB (small and medium business), SOHO (small office, home office) and consumer segments.
Highlights of the Study:
· A good portion of this information will either reside in the cloud or pass through it.
· India’s share of digital information is expected to grow 60-fold by 2020, driven by the roll-out of 3G/BWA networks, digitization of television networks, and increased technology adoption among individuals, SMBs, enterprises and in Government services like the Unique ID project, Census, among others.
· India’s 2010 tally for Digital Information equals information stored in 2.5 Billion iPads (16GB).
· More than 464,000 separate towers of iPads (16GB) stacked flat on top of each other, each as high as India's famed Qutub Minar.
· More than 600 million meters of iPads laid end-to-end, almost 10 times the length of the entire Indian railways network.
· If the 2.5 Billion iPads were laid end-to-end, they would be equal to a continuous line of more than 197 million Tata Nano cars.
· 50 percent more digital information is created today in India than the capacity that exists to store it. This number will grow to 80 percent over the next decade.
“The digital information explosion will create significant challenges for India’s CIOs and IT managers for two reasons,” says Manoj Chugh, President, EMC India and SAARC and Director of Global Accounts for EMC Asia Pacific & Japan. “First, enterprises have responsibility for the storage, protection and management of 80 percent of the Digital Universe’s data, and this liability will only increase as social networking and Web 2.0 technologies continue to impact the enterprise.
“Second, while digital information will grow 60-fold, enterprise investments in IT and staffing will grow only in single digits. The cumulative effect is driving CIOs to transform traditional infrastructures into private cloud data centers that offer internal and external customers IT as a service.”
He further added that: “The digital information deluge will translate into a significant market opportunity in India over the next decade. This is why EMC continues to invest in scaling its operations as a part of its previously announced USD2 billion investment commitment through 2014.
“We are driving technology innovation, forging industry defining partnerships globally and locally, and redefining service standards to support our customers in India. Today, EMC is well positioned to address these customer challenges and help them to achieve faster and higher returns on their IT investments.”
Key EMC Initiatives:
1. Forging industry partnerships to deliver the power of cloud computing
· EMC is rolling out its private cloud strategy in India. It is leveraging its global Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) coalition initiative formed jointly between EMC, Cisco and VMware which represents an unprecedented level of collaboration in development, services and partner enablement that "de-risks" the infrastructure virtualization journey of customers to private cloud implementation. As a part of the initiative, EMC and its partners will bring it all together for customers through dedicated Vblock infrastructure solution packages, Vblock unified customer engagement model and Vblock partner ecosystem.
· Locally, EMC has recently partnered with leading Indian IT services companies: Wipro Technologies for its FluidState Datacenter - a predesigned, prefabricated Datacenter which can be setup in less than a week and is optimized for efficiency, power, cooling and space and HCL Infosystems for its O’Zone cloud computing infrastructure to offer end to end cloud based computing solution service to help customers reduce fixed costs, have predictable operational expenses for business, and increase adaptability in the dynamic market environment.
2. Expanding EMC Global Services operations to offer managed information infrastructure services.
* EMC is expanding its Global Services business in India to offer managed services such as cost-effective, 24x7 remote monitoring services and comprehensive management of the information infrastructure tailored to a customer’s requirements. * Global Services also offers services to enable customers unleash the power of information in their organizations, while optimizing datacenter infrastructure and operations including private cloud specific services such as EMC Consulting advisory and assessment services and Vblock design and implementation services.
3. Expanding presence in SOHO, consumer and SMB segments
* EMC’s Iomega business is scaling its reach and distribution and has launched a series of new industry leading products. Iomega products are today available in 800-1,000 retail outlets across 40 cities in India, since its launch in India last year. * Iomega recently launched Skin Drives ) and will be the first to offer new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Models at USB 2.0 prices ). More importantly, Iomega drives come with pre-loaded free Iomega Protection Suite, a one-stop portfolio with backup and anti-virus software giving users added protection for their photos, videos, music, and other personal files.
