ECIL To Manufacture IIT-B Developed Transport Routers

Saturday, August 20, 2011: Electronics Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL), Hyderabad will manufacture high-speed transport routers, which have been developed by IIT-Bombay. ECIL has entered into a licence agreement with IIT-B to manufacture this router, developed for the first time in the country.

The agreement was signed by ECIL chairman and managing director, Y.S. Mayya and Prof. Devang Khakkar, director, IIT Bombay.

It is worth mentioning here that a router is a device which helps forward packets of data along networks. Router is essential in a local area network (LAN) to connect several computers to the Internet.

These high-speed transport routers have been developed by the Gigabit Networking Laboratory at IIT Bombay under the leadership of Prof. Aswin Gumaste. These routers promise to set new price/performance benchmarks in an industry dominated primarily by imported products.

According to the report, the router is adorned with built-in security features and a fully Indian design. ECIL opines that this development is significant in the context of fears expressed by experts about the vulnerabilities posed by ‘black box’ products that populate the information highway which carry vital and strategic data.

This development fits well in the indigenous technology space as the national data infrastructure will grow and gigabit pipes are likely to be installed in villages.
