Monday, October 31, 2011:
If you are an Ubuntu fan, you will love this one. You will now be able to enjoy your favourite Linux-based operating system (OS) on your mobile handsets and tablet devices as well.
According to a ZDNet report, this free and open source operating system is all set to challenge Google's Android OS. The report is based on a revelation made by Canonical's founder Mark Shuttleworth. He revealed that the company will focus on its longer-term goal of expanding to all computing platforms, including mobile phones, tablet devices and also smart TVs. But all this will be done after the company has finalised the latest version of desktop computers.

Canonical has been discussing with partners like chipset manufacturer ARM on such possibilities. However, details of the product schedule are not available as yet.
It is worth mentioning here that Ubuntu for mobiles can be a good alternative for Google's Android partners who believe that Motorola's purchase can initiate conflict of interest for them. Ubuntu will serve as a disruptive, smaller option that they can adopt when working with the industry’s bigger names. The report quoted Shuttleworth as saying, “OEMs have tough choices. They can build their own operating system, such as what HP did for a while with webOS or work in a consortium. Consortiums can’t win. They can’t take a forceful, direct view with their products. The smartest OEM strategy is to play people off against each other. Thus, some OEMs want to have Ubuntu as a disruptive element. A strong Ubuntu can be both more co-operative with OEMs than a larger company and give them leverage with Google and Microsoft.”
Ubuntu, however innovative, will have to face a tough competition from Google, Microsoft and Apple. It will have to be seen how the company takes this move further.
