"Businesses need to create definite guidelines and focus on security audits"

Today, businesses are faced with innumerable security threats into their networks. Besides, threats emerging on the social networks relating to identity theft have costs companies a lot in recent times.

To talk on these issues, Onkar Sharma of BenefIT Bureau caught up with Govind Rammurthy, CEO and managing director, eScan, a security solution company.

Q. What are the security challenges staring in the face today when it comes to businesses?
The use of unsecured Internet connectivity, untrained staff, absence of rules and policies for Internet usage within the organisation are significant areas where businesses have to look into. These areas often throw the whole organisational data and IPs (Internet protocol) into a risky zone. The vulnerability to attacks due to this is one of the biggest challenges that has to be taken care of.

Q. How can these challenges be addressed?
As mentioned above a due diligence on the employee awareness, formation of rules and policies, and securing the network and Internet gateways are the key areas. A good security solution deployed at both the gateway and end-points can provide a balanced security protection to the organisation from all kinds of malware, botnet, and spam attacks, among others.

Q. Identity has become a big issue online specifically on social network where cyber thugs are openly taking advantage to mint money through criminal means. How can businesses meet the challenge of identity theft?
Most of the identity thefts happen due to wrong usage of the Internet and by not having definite guidelines and periodic review of the logs or security audits. Businesses need to create definite guidelines and focus on security audits regularly to avoid such mishaps. Again, the users need to be aware about the best practices to avoid falling prey to such situations. Apart from these, as specified the implementation of a robust security solution is essential.

Q. What are your suggestions to companies that do not pay much attention to security and have overlooked this aspect?
The key question is how an organisation values its data and IPs. If it takes a serious note towards the protection of its data and IP, it certainly would value the security requirements. It is like keeping our own house unlocked and inviting thieves into our home. Hence, they should invest in a good security solution to protect their data from both external and internal attacks.

Q. On what kind of solution should businesses invest in order to secure their data?
The organisations should invest in securing their servers and endpoints with a good anti-virus solution which gives them complete protection from the external and internal data theft or attacks by malware and botnets etc.
