AppliedMicro Reshapes The Cloud!

AppliedMicro Reshapes The CloudBANGALORE, INDIA: Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) has introduced the X-Gene server on chip, which is said to be right-sized for the cloud. Dr. Paramesh Gopi, president and CEO, AMCC, said that it has features such as 64-bit server class CPU, multi-core for distributed computing, increased memory capacity and 10G I/O integration, high performance network acceleration, and integration of high speed peripherals. It should be available some time in 2H'12.Touching upon the data center trends in the past decade, there were few number of nodes, which has now led to a large number of nodes. Earlier, the data center was the cost center. It has since transformed into core business. Earlier, there used to be structured, but complex data structures (GB). This has given way to large unstructured data (PB). The data centers had evolved with performance first, then price, then power. Now, it is completely TCO. Finally, there has been a major reduction in power usage effectiveness (PUE) 3x, which is now 1.1x.There is a need for low power cloud computing today as there is a large power penalty involved. The cost of power is equal to the cost of server hardware. The right-sized solution can influence TCO savings of $150 million over the life of a data center.Even data centers are said to be undergoing fundamental shifts, from a custom form format to an open compute form factor. The Ethernet fabric has now been replaced with a super-compute low latency fabric. The Enterprise server has now become a commodity server. Also, the price has come down drastically, from $10,000 to $1,000. Scale-up computing has given way to scale out computing, while virtualization is making way for physicalization. There have been fundamental shifts in usage and software as well. The earlier corporate data has been replaced by consumer data. Commercial software has given way too pen source software. Structured database has been replaced by the unstructured database, while managed data sets are getting replaced by fragmented data sets. The once centralized systems have given way to distributed systems. In the middle of all of these changes, the processor hardware has remained (and continues to remain) yesterday's. From being CPU intensive, it will move on tomorrow to being data movement intensive. There is a fundamental gap in today's processing solutions. The ideal product centers around performance, power and right-sizing.Dr. Gopi added that AMCC's X-Gene addresses the efficiency need. The X-Gene 64bit ARM is right sized and data efficient, featuring low power. It is said to have the right-sized compute, memory and I/O.According to him, the future cloud will be simplified. Earlier, numerous chipsets were required for traditional rack/blade designing of servers that were core performance driven. The new servers will have features such as smart integration, allowing 70 per cent cost savings. The X-Gene server on chip is right-sized for the cloud. It will be 15x smaller with a revolutionary slim design. The server will be intelligence driven, with a fabric w/ virtualized I/O.-- Pradeep Chakraborty
