Different Cameras, Different Applications
In today's world, it takes longer to think of an application for your device in comparison to an accessory. Think of any function and rest assured, you will be spoilt for choice. A camera undoubtedly falls in this category. Need night-vision, there's a camera for that; want to unleash the James Bond within, one for that too; curious about wildlife photography that can neatly capture the predator and its prey, you're in luck again. In this article, we look at how your regular click cameras have come a long way!
Listed below are some of the many different cameras available in the market, which are used to cater to just as many varied applications.
Closed Circuit Television
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is used as a video camera to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors. It differs from broadcast television as signals are not openly transmitted, though it may employ point to point (P2P), point to multipoint, or mesh wireless links. Though almost all video cameras fit this definition, the term is most often applied to those used for surveillance in areas that may need monitoring such as banks, casinos, airports, military installations, and convenience stores. IP Camera
An Internet protocol camera, or IP camera, is a kind of digital video camera commonly employed for surveillance, and which, unlike analog closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, can send and receive data via a computer network and the Internet. Although most cameras that do this are webcams, the term "IP camera" or "Netcam" is usually applied only to those used for surveillance.
There are two kinds of IP cameras:
Centralised IP cameras, which require a central Network Video Recorder (NVR) to handle recording, video and alarm management.
Decentralised IP cameras, which do not require a central NVR, as the cameras have recording functionality built-in and can thus record directly to digital storage media, such as flash drives, hard disk drives or network attached storage.
Harshal Desai of Navatek Systems elaborates, "When the name camera comes up, people think in two directions, photography or security. But in our range of cameras we have more than both. We have a range of IP Cameras, which can be deemed as a security product, but our IP Cameras are of the Plug n Play variety, which even allows you to monitor kids at home or elderly parents. Now-a-days, almost every home has an Internet connection and these cameras easily connect with the home network and let users connect by simply entering the website address mentioned on the box and view what's happening there. The user doesn't have to be an IT pro to be able to use this or set this up. The camera takes all of 15 minutes to setup and is available in wired as well as wireless (Wi-Fi) option."

Button Camera
Button cameras are some of the most sophisticated hidden cameras available in the market. These tiny, covert recorders can be smaller than a stick of gum and still house high-resolution imaging technology. Satful Sonawane of Security Planet, Pune adds, "What makes a button spy camera unique is the fact that it is a completely inconspicuous body-worn surveillance. Unlike spy glasses or a pen camera, a spy camera button is hidden in your clothing, as opposed to being worn on your face or placed in a pocket. Button cameras are attached to your clothing by replacing a button on your shirt or jacket, and then having a replacement button cover the camera lens. The process is quick and easy, and the button covers screw directly onto the hidden camera."
On the other hand, the vast majority of button cams are so small, in fact, that they can't even power themselves or house their own DVRs. As a result, these tiny hidden cameras require a DVR to function. A wide variety of pocket-sized DVRs can be bought off the markets that not only provide the necessary ability to save recordings, but also the power supply these cameras need. For an even greater level of hidden recording, a wireless button camera works in the exact same way as a wired cam, except it doesn't need to be connected to a DVR by wire. Much like a hidden IP camera or a Wi-Fi camera, these hidden cameras connect to your pocket DVR without the need of wires.
Night Vision Cameras
Without an iota of doubt, the first thing you probably think of when you see the word night vision is an action movie you've seen or Counter Strike, Modern Warfare and the like (for some of our younger game enthusiasts), in which someone straps on a pair of night-vision goggles to find someone else in a dark building on a moonless night. And you may have wondered, "Do those things really work? Can you actually see in the dark?"
The answer is a resounding yes. With the proper night-vision equipment, you can see a person standing over 200 yards (183 m) away on a moonless, cloudy night! Night vision can work in two very different ways, depending on the technology used.
Image enhancement - This works by collecting the tiny amounts of light, including the lower portion of the infra-red light spectrum, that are present but may be imperceptible to our eyes, and amplifying it to the point that we can easily observe the image.
Thermal imaging - This technology operates by capturing the upper portion of the infra-red light spectrum, which is emitted as heat by objects instead of simply reflected as light. Hotter objects, such as warm bodies, emit more of this light than cooler objects like trees or buildings.
Thermal Imaging Cameras
A thermographic or infra-red camera is a device that forms an image using infra-red radiation, similar to a common camera that forms an image using visible light. Instead of the 450-750 nanometre range of the visible light camera, infra-red cameras operate in wavelengths as long as 14,000 nm. All objects emit a certain amount of black body radiation as a function of their temperatures. Generally speaking, the higher an object's temperature is, the more infra-red radiation is emitted as black-body radiation. A special camera can detect this radiation in a way similar to an ordinary camera does visible light. It works even in total darkness because ambient light level does not matter. This makes it useful for rescue operations in smoke-filled buildings and underground.
