Oracle wants to open source the codes for its Internet application platform- JavaFX (JFX) to help developers in the next-generation Java client toolkit. The open source JavaFX would allow Java developers to write cross-platform smartphone apps. Oracle is expecting to open source the Android and iOS implementations of JavaFX UI by the first quarter of 2013.

"We’re also going to open source our iOS and Android implementations over the next couple months. A majority of you said you’d contribute to an iOS / Android port (either via bug reports or direct code contributions) and we’re working hard to be setup so that when the code is opened you’ll be able to start in on it. One aspect of this is fixing up our build / test setup so that it is trivial for people to build and test fixes on JavaFX. I’ve prioritized fixing the build / test system now so that we will be in a position to accept contributions at a more rapid pace,” wrote Richard Bair, chief architect of the Client Java Platform, Oracle, in a blog post.
The team at Oracle is looking forward to release the code for Glass (the JavaFX windowing toolkit), Prism (the scene rasterizer and renderer), the web rendering component, and a few other APIs within a couple of months. After which, we can expect the JavaFX font renderer as well. The JavaFX-font is based on proprietary technology licensed from Bitstream, however, Bair has stated that Oracle is looking forward to develop a replacement.
