Saturday, February 23, 2013 With so many Linux distributions to choose from, how do you decide which one to try? Well, one clear indication is the ranking of the distro on DistroWatch. While Ubuntu, Fedora are all known names, there is one upcoming distro that was launched in August last year and has already reached the Number 15 spot on the DistroWatch ranking.

Manjaro, Manjaro Linux, DistroWatch, Linux distro, Arch Linux, power

Here are some highlights of the distro:

Built on Arch Linux
Arch Linux is a known name in the Linux world, especially for more experienced users who want simplicity, power and speed. The project team said, “Manjaro provides all the benefits of the Arch operating system combined with a focus on user-friendliness and accessibility. Available in both 32 and 64 bit versions, Manjaro is suitable for newcomers as well as experienced Linux users.”

User-friendly as well as powerful
While being based on Arch Linux, Manjaro is user-friendly, ideal for new users. The developers wrote, “The distro includes a user-friendly installer and is designed to work straight out of the box.” It has preinstalled desktop environments, automatic hardware detection and driver installation, multimedia codecs, and graphical applications for installing software and updating the system. But that does not mean it is not exciting enough for experienced users. You can customise to suit personal taste and preference. It also has a minimalist NET-Edition stripped of any preinstalled software.

Desktop options
While Xfec is the default desktop in case of Manjaro, it offers Cinnamon, KDE, and OpenBox options as well as E17, MATE, and LXDE through what it calls “Community Editions”, reports PC World.

Regular updates
Majaro has a rolling release development model, which means users always have the most up-to-date system possible, without having to actually install new versions. As and when new releases are announced, they're simply up-to-date snapshots of the latest software, the report further adds.

Software choice

With Manjaro, users can access the Arch User Repository, thereby all the software packages in it. The developers said, “It also offers its own official repositories “in order to ensure that any software packages provided (e.g. system updates and applications) have been fully tested and are completely stable before release.”
