The use of license free software has enabled the institution to save paper as well.

Friday, April 19, 2013 We have frequently heard how open source has helped users across the globe save on cost by offering alternatives to Windows and Apple Mac OS X based products. For example, Gimp is one of the many Photoshop alternatives available in the market and then you also have LibreOffice for Microsoft Office pack.

And now, open source is enabling US-based Indiana University (IU) to save around $20 million, reducing the cost for finance-based software system. According to the press release posted by IU, the Kuali Financial System (KFS) is an open source software that was developed to meet the needs of colleges and universities. The open-source nature of the system ensures that IU avoids the costs of licensing commercial systems that cost anywhere between $10 million and $20 million, to buy and install.

"These major savings are a result of Indiana University identifying and pursuing opportunities, designed specifically for the precise needs of higher education, that have enabled us to manage our administrative functions more effectively, efficiently and at a lower cost," IU President Michael A. McRobbie was quoted as saying in the release.

With KFS, the faculty and administration of IU have been given one common place to analyse and approve purchases, research grants, human resources transactions, compliance and other administrative tasks that need paper. All the paper-centric hassles have been negated by the use of KFS, which has documented the forms in an electronic format.

This is not the first instance when IU has implemented open-source based software in its set-up. Back in 2005, IU with other universities aimed at developing community-based, business-oriented software tools to meet the unique needs of higher education institutions.

Since then, the Kuali Foundation has added 70 university and corporate members in support of eight software systems.
