Here's How You Can Be A Part Of Open Source With No Programming Skills

Open source has a lot of opportunities and they are not just for developers.

Thursday, October 24, 2013 You donít have to know programming in order to contribute to open source projects. The fact is that there is a lot of scope for those with no background or skill in programming. While you can contribute to a lot of different software, it is best to stick to the software that you regularly use yourself. This makes it easier to recognise your inputs and see what theyíre actually doing.

Open Source, contributing to open source, FOSS, open source software, bug reporting, open source bugs, open source news, tech news, news

Here are a few ways for this.

1) Using open source products: Just by using open source projects, youíre contributing to them. There are open source alternatives to almost any proprietary software that is available out there. So, as long as youíre using Libre Office Writer in place of MS Word, youíre contributing to the community.

2) Reporting bugs: When the open source product that you are using crashes, you should contact the developer and inform them of the development. This feedback is valuable to any open source developer as it helps them in fixing bugs and making their software better.

3) Write Documentation: Developers are usually busy developing their software, so they need someone for documentation. Providing help in this department saves them some valuable time and it is much appreciated.

4) Translation: Like any software, language can be a huge barrier. Open source software will grow only when it can reach people from all over the world. To do this, it will need to be available in a variety of languages. If you have knowledge in different languages, then help the developers in translating their software into different languages.

There are other ways too. Since open source software caters to a variety of topics, almost any skill you have can come in handy. Look for the opportunities and offer your help. Further, when you create something on an open source software, do so under a creative commons license. This helps in promoting the software through your creations.
