Saturday, December 14, 2013 The first 300 prototypes of Valve’s much awaited Steam Machines have been shipped and along with it, the Steam OS has been released to the public. As reported earlier, the Steam OS became available for download in the beta mode for users. The OS will be powering the new gaming consoles (Steam Machines). Valve had earlier announced the 13 December release, advising that only pro Linux users should download the OS right now.

According to the company, the Steam OS is based on Debian 7 (Wheezy), which has reportedly been optimised for a living room experience by Valve. Further, the GNOME desktop environment is also a pre installed part of the operating system. Moreover, while the OS has been built for gaming purposes, it can still be used as a work PC as well and users will simply need to download any relevant software that they have.

The company has also released a set of instructions for those looking to build their own Steam Machines using the Steam OS beta version. In addition, the installation process for the OS is quite simple but you will need to rid your PC of all other operating systems and existing partitions on the PC.

On the system requirements front, Valve has said that a UEFI-based Intel 64-bit processor is needed. In addition, the device should have at least 4 GB of RAM and 500 GB of hard drive space along with an Nvidia graphics processing unit. Valve has reportedly also announced that support for AMD and the Intel GPU PC, which will be coming soon. The company is also encouraging OEMs to make their own Steam Machines by contacting Valve for licensing for proprietary steam machine clients.

The Steam OS that has been launched though is in the beta version only. Many reports have said that the Steam OS should be downloaded only by Linux veterans for now and other should wait for the more stable release in January.
