Thursday, December 19, 2013 One of the best things about Linux based operating systems is that they can power almost everything and that too free of cost. In most of the cases, Linux works perfectly out of the box and in others, you may have to spend some time researching for tricks to enable support for your wireless chips, input devices, graphic cards, et al. Small Linux PCs have taken the PC market to an all new level. Adding to that, here an exciting Linux computer, called Lini PC, which is powered by Intel's Haswell processor. Impressed? Here's more.

Lini PC is a small desktop computer, that offers the users a choice between Xubuntu 13.10 or Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro. It is priced starting $399 for a model powered by a 3 GHz Intel Pentium G3220 dual-core processor based on Haswell architecture, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and Xubuntu.

If you want to go for higher configurations, you have choice of a 2.3 GHz Core i5-4670T quad-core processor, up to 16GB of storage, and a solid state drive with 120GB to 480GB of storage. The top model of the PC is priced at $1129 and if at all you want a Windows operating system and Office software, you will have to pay $300 extra.

What makes this PC a tad different from the exiting options is its compact size. It measures 22.9 cm x 20.3 cm x 5.7 cm. It can provision for two memory slots, HDMI, DVI, and VGA ports, analog and optical audio ports, an eSATA port, and 4 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 ports and weighs about 4 pounds.

Here are the official details of Lini PC:

The Name

Lini is a not-so-clever combination of Linux and Mini. It is also cute, cuddly, and endearing, sort of like Clippy. At least it's not Bob.

What Lini represents is the idea of a computing experience that is more than just smoke-and-mirrors.

Lini is about productivity, performance, and efficiency. Lini is Industrial Strength in a world of Industrial Chic.

The Design

Designing high performance computing systems requires a deep knowledge of the many layers of the hardware and software stack as well as a correspondingly deep knowledge of the various component markets, supply chains, and suppliers.

Lini is built on decades of experience in systems integration. The kind of practical exprience that comes from designing purpose built systems with tight budgetary constraints and performance demands.

Lini is infused with the DIY ethic, while still delivering enormous practical value to competitive enterprise.

The Function

Lini is a versatile beast, as comfortable on the rack as she is on the desktop. At the heart of this versatility is the Linux operating system.

Linux is the most used operating system in the world. Mobile devices, media boxes, routers, servers, they all run on Linux.

The total install base for linux exceeds every other operating system by a wide margin.

Lini combines the industrial strength Linux foundation with an easy to use desktop interface that provides more functionality than any Mac or Windows PC.

Lini does it all: editing documents, presentations, and spreadsheets; best in class media center functionality; web browsing; photo and video editing; BitTorrent and FTP; all built on an Enterprise class operating system.

Best of all, this functionality is free. It is automatically updated on a daily basis, and you never have to worry about paying subscription fees, having trial editions expire, or any of the other hassles that are typical with Windows and Mac.

You can even run Windows and Mac programs on your Linux desktop using Oracle's VirtualBox virtualization software.

The Performance

Lini was designed and built to offer the absolute maximum performance for price possible. Lini is built for the desktop as much as she is built for the Cloud and HPC clusters.

This is no accident.

In order to achieve optimal economies of scale it is crucial to use mass produced components. Lini was designed around low-cost, high-performance, and mass-market components that offer ideal price/performance ratios.

At the heart of Lini is the Pentium G3220, 4th Gen Haswell 3.0 Ghz Dual Core processor. According to Passmark, the most exhaustive CPU benchmark comparison available, Lini uses the best value CPU available by a wide margin.

Compared to the I7-4770, the top of the line 4th Gen Haswell, Lini offers 56% better performance for the price.

By using higher value and lower cost CPU components, Lini can be built with far higher performing SSD hard drives. Yielding far greater overall system performance at a highly competitive price.

The Efficiency

Lini is the most efficient desktop computer you can buy.

Total system power consumption ranges from 16 watts at idle to 32 watts at 100% load. Lini is way more efficient than a traditional light bulb, and even competes favorably with fluorescent light bulbs.

When it comes to performance/price/power, the ultimate metric for gauging total operating costs, Lini is the grand champion.

There is nothing else on the market that even comes close.

The History

Lini was designed and built by Ersun Warncke.

Lini is the fruition of a year's work on improving the initial design of the PC-1492. That work included test builds of dozens of other systems including the PC-746 and the GameboxHD.

The Lini design alone is the product of over a dozen prototype builds using different cases, heatsinks, fans, hard drives, ssds, and other components.

The development of Lini is only the latest chapter for its designer, who has been building PC's since the days of the 8086 and 8088. MS DOS 5.0, 6.22, Windows 3.0, and 3.1.

With a lifetime of uninterrupted experience designing and building computers comes an unmistakable instinct for knowing how to assemble the best components into a superior machine.

Lini is only the lastest incarnation, offering a level of price and performance unmatched by any other.

For the consumer, Lini is a value added product in the truest sense. The components have their own price, but only the designer knows how to combine them so uniquely in order to achieve such an unprecedented level of value and performance.

The Monkey

Clyde Monkey is a permanent fixture in all of Ersun Warncke's projects. A totem that reminds both the author and the reader not to take these things too seriously.

It has also been found, through scientific testing, that the inclusion of a sales monkey in advertising copy can result in a 10-15% higher selling price.

People really like monkeys.

Or, at the very least, people like the self-deprecation involved in framing a sales pitch as though it were being made by a monkey.
