Thursday, January 02, 2014 While 2013 was clearly a good year for Linux and open source, we can expect it to be better for them this year. Jack Wallen from Tech Republic has shared 10 bold Linux predictions for 2014 and he feels that 2014 will be a banner year for Linux and open source. Here’s why:

Linux/open source will rule corporate data this year
With larger companies strictly looking at security and flexibility, they will all eventually turn to open source and especially Linux. They will find their demands perfectly met with this platform in comparison to any other out there.

Valve will push OEM hardware developers to support Linux
Now that Valve has joined the Linux Foundation, we can expect OEM hardware developers and vendors to put their efforts in the Linux direction. Nvidia and ATI will benefit the most as Valve will be working to ensure they can support open source platforms and software.

Finally, a Linux tablet
Beyond the Nexus line of tablet, now Linux (especially Ubuntu) will enter the mainstream market in 2014. They will at least have images that will be capable of being installed on mass-market hardware by the end of the year. Once this happens, it will boost other vendors to start their Linux journey too.

GNOME 3 will gain some attention
There were many out there who despised the GNOME 3. In 2014, we can expect some damage control that could help GNOME 3 bounce back. They may be adding a more user friendly application launched or the new GNOME Core Apps.

A major feature coming from KDE
KDE developers will help infuse life in it and will most probably be releasing a new feature that will bring users back. It may be the revamped KDE Tasks. Let’s wait and watch!

Smart machines, courtesy Open source
We are seeing ‘smart’ phones, tablet and more. This year will bring forth other smart machines that will have open source and Linux as their driving force. This is because they are ideal for embedded systems.

Open source will redefine cloud
With more and more companies turning towards cloud services for solutions, open source tools with lead the way.

Linux desktop will witness growth
In 2013, Linux and open source had a meagre 5 per cent desktop market share but 2014 will see a change of sorts. The reasons being more companies are seeing the benefit of Linux and open source and with XP seeing a downfall, more people will turn to an alternative operating system, which would most likely be Linux.

Pre-installed Linux machines will sell more
Now that they are entering the market, chances are it will also sell more. Companies like Dell, HP, Alienware are adding Linux pre-install to their list of offerings.
