Monday, January 27, 2014 You don't necessarily have to be a tech buff to enjoy the finer things in life courtesy the open source technology domain. The number of users taking the plunge from Windows to Linux has seen a considerable rise in the recent times, primarily owing to the freedom the latter provides. However, are you one of those 'newbies' who desperately want to try Linux (Ubuntu) for instance but are not sure where to start?

Ubuntu, Computer, Windows, Live USB Drive , Dual-boot, VirtualBox, Virtual Machine, News, Technology news

There are lots of ways out there to try out Ubuntu on your computers. We bring you five ways that will make your lives easier:

1. Boot From a Live USB Drive or CD

-Download the latest Ubuntu disc image from Ubuntu’s website.

-Use Unetbootin to put Ubuntu on your USB flash drive or burn the downloaded ISO image to a disc.

-Restart your computer from the removable media you provided. Select the Try Ubuntu option.

The computer will now boot from the removable media provided and you’ll be able to use Ubuntu without making any changes to the computer’s hard drive.

2. Install Ubuntu On Windows With Wubi

-Wubi installs Ubuntu to a file on your Windows partition.

-When you reboot your computer, you’ll have the option to boot into Ubuntu or Windows.

3. Run Ubuntu In a Virtual Machine

-To create a Ubuntu virtual machine, download and install VirtualBox.

-Create a new virtual machine, select the Ubuntu operating system, and provide the ISO file you downloaded from Ubuntu’s website when prompted.

-Go through the installation process as if you were installing Ubuntu on a real computer.

It must be noted that virtual machines are slower than running the operating system on your computer itself.

4. Dual-Boot Ubuntu

-Just place the Ubuntu installer on a USB drive, CD, or DVD.

-Restart your computer and select the Install Ubuntu option instead of the Try Ubuntu option.

It must be noted that the process makes Ubuntu a bit more difficult to remove.

5. Replace Windows With Ubuntu

Install Ubuntu normally but select the Replace Windows with Ubuntu option.
