Science, The Centre Of Civil Society

The minister of science and technology and earth sciences, Government of India, feels that a strong civil society emerges out of proper utilisation of science and technology.

Civil society is like the consciousness in the living. And science can play a vital role in strengthening the civil society, feels Kapil Sibal, the minister of science and technology and earth sciences, Government of India.

He went on further and said that science has to be at the centre of the civil society to make use of technology for meaningful development. He was speaking at the Eighth Foundation Day of National Centre for Plant Genome Research (NCPGR).
The minister said that science and civil society are intrinsically interlinked and efforts be made to fill the gap between the two at various levels i.e. level of policy framework, scientific research, an institutional etc. Science is not only discovering this or that but it is about the lives of common people. Appreciating the work of NCPGR, he said that science is looking at agriculture, and now agriculture should also look at science to find solutions to the problems confronting it.
Earlier, Prof C.N.R. Rao of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, delivered the J.C. Bose Memorial Lecture on ‘New Chemistry with Nano Materials’ on the occasion. He said having nanotechnology is like having 1000 CDs in a wrist watch. Explaining Moores Law, he said the size of things (chips) decreases by a half every 1.5—2 years and the size of transistor is already nano. Use of nano crystals, tubes, wires, films and walls will revolutionise the global life. During the lecture, he gave interesting, inspiring and thought-provoking vivid glimpses into the future technologies.
