Monday, April 02, 2007 Pune may actually overtake India's IT hubs Bengaluru and Hyderabad when it comes to unwiring. The city is poised to become the country's first to get a high-speed wireless Internet network.

The project is a joint effort by Intel Corporation and Pune Municipal Corporation. Once complete, it will enable users to stay connected through their laptops and PDAs anywhere in the city.

According to Economic Times, "Intel, along with Chennai-based Microsense, will establish infrastructure for a wireless communication network covering the entire 280 sq km of this cultural centre of Maharashtra in a couple of years. While Intel will provide design and planning support, Microsense will carry out network deployment. Microsense was involved in establishing a wireless Internet network at the airport here."

'Unwiring Pune' project has only one obstacle standing in its advancement: the Central Government is yet to announce its spectrum policy, which will allot bandwidth for high-speed connectivity.
