Wednesday, May 02, 2007:
Dell customers recently flooded the company’s IdeaStorm requesting alternatives to pre-loaded Windows OS. Realising the customer demand, Dell had announced that it would preload Linux on its select PCs. Now, the company has made it official that it would be running some of its PCs on open source Linux OS, Ubuntu.

Canonical, a private company founded (and funded) by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth for the promotion of free software projects, and Dell have joined hands to offer Ubuntu 7.04 on select desktop and notebook products. This is a tremendous step forward for Ubuntu, our users and customers.
“We believe that Dell’s decision is a strong endorsement of Ubuntu and to the work of many in coding, translating and promoting open source software. It is also testament to the demand that exists for Ubuntu,” says Ububtu website.
Ubuntu is one of the most user-friendly Linux distros, giving the feel and ease of Windows operating system. And the best thing is if you were worried that Microsoft will eventually withdraw support from your Windows XP and you would have to shell out unnecessary money to upgrade your hardware, which you actually don’t require, just to run expensive Vista, this is a feast for you. Linux is available for free and has big support from OSS community. Now, since Dell is offering Linux on its PCs, you can pick your copy of Ubuntu and enjoy the free Linux ride on your current PC.
