Thursday, May 10, 2007 Samsung India has expanded its R&D operations in India by setting up a new software R&D centre at Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Samsung India Software Centre (SISC), which was earlier housed at the Samsung manufacturing complex at Noida, has been moved to a new location at Noida as it goes for a major expansion programme this year. This software centre, which is one of Samsung's 16 global R&D centres is poised to become the biggest overseas R&D centre for digital media products, the company said.

Samsung India Software Centre plans to grow its headcount to 400 from 300 and plans to take on more work in the areas of digital TVs, next-generation wireless technology (WiFi, WiBro etc.), thin clients and home network solutions.

Commented Dr Vikram Vij, VP, R&D, Samsung India Software Center, "Over the past four and a half years, the role of SISC has evolved from project support for our headquarter requirements to base IP development for key areas in TVs/monitors/DVD players and camcorders. The mission of SISC is to create and provide software solutions for the global digital media business."

He further added, "We will be investing $5 million towards expanding the operations of SISC in this year and will focus on product development for worldwide market as well as value-added features for Indian market. It has already applied for 25 patents so far. We expect to file another 10-15 patents by the end of this year."

According to the Economic Times, Korean consumer electronics major Samsung on Thursday said it would hire about 700 R&D software engineers for its centre at Noida. “Currently, we employ 300 people at Samsung India Software Centre (SISC) and would take the number up to 400 by this year-end, eventually we hope to touch 1,000 in the next three years,” sais Samsung India Electronics vice-president Software Centre Vikram Vij.
