Friday, February 15, 2008:
The open source community is literally rocking the world and so is India’s largest Linux and Open Source convention and expo. The community is now being supported by Microsoft, long considered to be the 'opposing side'. Open Source India Week (OSIW) 2008 kicked off yesterday in Delhi after completing the Bengalure and Mumbai editions. At the occasion, Radhesh Balakrishnan, director, platform strategy, Microsoft, could be seen wooing the open source community, holding an olive branch in the form of promoting interoperability between the two systems.
Shared Balakrishnan at OSIW 2008, "We believe multiple platforms can and will continue to co-exist, and that customers will choose those options or combination of options that suit their needs best.

We believe that we should be able to deliver seamless experiences even in such heterogeneous scenarios."
"So we engage with the open source community through industry collaboration as well as open source development, i.e. promoting interoperability with open source software through engagements organised by the Microsoft Open Source Software Lab and on the Microsoft community Web site, Port25. During OSIW, we intend to share our progress on this journey and further work on enhancing our collaboration with the open source community in India," he added.
There is a perceptible shift in areas where open source is making headway. In several sessions at OSIW 2008, the need to adopt a more collaborative approach is being appreciated as open source increasingly makes inroads into day-to-day business applications. An interesting aspect reflecting a growing trend is the growing community of 'FOSS entrepreneurs'. Commented Dr Anthony Wasserman, Carnegie-Mellon University, West, "It is very encouraging to see so many budding entrepreneurs here, I hope they understand that in addition to great technology, it is marketing and selling it right that makes for successful business."
The Delhi programme of OSIW 2008 includes the TechZone – workshops and technical sessions, the Software Development Talks which update software developers with the latest trends, technologies and methodologies in the open source world; while IT Implementation Talks inform IT managers of the latest open source solutions and best practices across a wide spectrum of business verticals and applications. While the workshops, seminars and keynote lectures are being held on 14 February and 15 February 2008, a CXO Summit will also be held on 15 February 2008.
Open source has made significant progress in developing accessibility tools and solutions aimed at empowering the physically challenged community through the use of technology. Visually impaired or people suffering from autism or cerebral palsy are in the need of solutions available in local languages, and the OSS is one hope for them to live an enhanced quality of life. This will be the theme of 'Open Source Solutions for People with Disabilities', which is planned on the 15 February 2008.

| Microsoft is sheer evil
There was nothing worth mentioned in the talk by Microsoft guys. Microsoft is a hardcore evil which only wants a bite in every pie they see around.
Microsoft has emerged as a anti-people company which has a lot of affection for corporates. In plain words Microsoft is a DICTATOR (Software Hiter) which wants to control the world on its own terms and conditions.
They have started talking about open source as they see a lot of money here. Vista is its swan song. None of its properties are working well, except Office suite. What ever presence you see is due to deep penetration of WIndows and its monopolistic policy of forcing companies to offer products exclusively for its OS.
The worst thing is they don't want to hear the world Linux but are OK with Open Source.
If they really like competition they should open up windows. And I can tell you for sure, if Windows is put in ring with some OS biggies, windows will get knocked out in the first 25 seconds of the first round.
Its just that users are so used to it that they think its easier, but actually its carppier.
No regards |

| The comments from microsoft, which they expect people to believe-in, are at complete variance from their action. If microsoft wants people to believe in what they say, they need to accept with all sincerety and humality that Open Source is there as a fact and they need to respect it, even as a competitior. They need to stop all their FUD, their negative actions against Open Source and Linux. They need to stop showing their money-power (read muscle-power) in derogatory remarks (yes, their manipulated studies are just that) against Linux and Open Source. They need to accept the Open standards and integrate these standards in their applications including the OS.
If they are sincere, then they need to accept these facts and talk at a level playing field.
Their sincerity will become clear only by their actions and not just words. No one believes in their words, just because their actions are different.
The saying "Actions speak louder than words" is working in this scenario very well.
Rest is upto them and they are free to decide their own future directions. |
