Tuesday, March 25, 2008:
India is likely to become second largest wireless network in the world after China in the first half of April 2008, with the subscribers base already crossing 250.93 million mark, according to Telecom Regulatory Authority Of India. China, being the largest wireless network market, has the subscriber base of 550.50 million, whereas the US has 260.50 million subscribers for mobile phone services at present.

According to CTIA website (a association of wireless operators in US), in a month, the US is adding about 2-3 million subscribers, China is adding 6-7 million subscribers, where as India's monthly wireless subscriber addition is highest in the range of 8-9 million a month. Thus, India's wireless subscriber base during the first half of April 2008 will surpass that of USA and will become second largest wireless network in the world, confirms TRAI.
The total subscriber base (wireless + wireline) of India will also cross 300 million mark in April 2008, says TRAI. In the wireline segment, the subscriber base has decreased to 39.18 million in the month of February 2008 as against 39.22 million subscribers in January 2008.
The total number of telephone connections reaches 290.11 million at the end of February 2008 as compared to 281.62 million in January 2008, and the overall tele-density is 25.31 per cent at the end of February 2008 as against 24.63 per cent in January 2008.
According to TRAI, total broadband subscribers base has reached 3.47 million by the end of February 2008 as compared to 3.24 million by the end of January 2008.
