Saturday, August 09, 2008:
Vishay Intertechnology has broadened its optoelectronics portfolio with the release of a new miniaturised encoder/decoder for serial infrared (IrDA) wireless communication, TOIM5232. The new device provides proper pulse shaping of RS-232 data signals for serial infrared (SIR) IrDA transceivers and supports data rates from 1.2kbit/s to 115.2kbit/s.

Offered in the QFN (quad flat no leads) package, which measures 4mmx4mmx0.75mm, TOIM5232 features the same operation and performance as TOIM4232 in a fraction of the space. Typical applications for TOIM5232 will include wirelessly enabled data loggers and utility metres; IrDA communication in mobile phones, notebook computers, PDAs and other consumer electronics; and medical applications such as glucose metres and home diagnostic metres.
TOIM5232 features an operating voltage range of 2.7 to 3. 6V with 5-V tolerant inputs. Maximum current consumption in standby mode is a very low 1μA. A programmable baud clock generator gives designers a choice of 13 baud rates from 1200Hz to 115kHz or an external clock may be used.
In transmit mode, TOIM5232 shortens RS-232 output signals to IrDA-compatible electrical pulses to drive an infrared transmitter. In receive mode, TOIM5232 stretches the received infrared pulses to the proper bit width, depending on the operating bit rate. TOIM5232 is software programmable through the RS-232 port and needs no external wiring for the baud rate setting.
Samples and production quantities of TOIM5232 are available now.
