Google Earth Aided Terrorists In Plotting Mumbai Attack?
 |
|
| |
Google Earth provides free Internet satellite pictures to sensitive locations in India, which can be misused by terror agents. According to a PIL filed by Amit Karkhanis, Google Earth should be banned for India's security and safety.

Tuesday, December 09, 2008:
It's a world of tech-savvy people and terrorists are no exception. Digital-age terrorists use high-tech devices to spread their culture of fear. Mumbai, the Indian financial capital, was the latest victim of the deadly terrorist attacks. Following the 26/11 terror attacks, Amit Karkhanis, a Mumbai-based advocate, has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a complete ban on Google Earth. According to the PIL, the terrorists responsible for 26/11 Mumbai attacks had detailed maps of the city, which can be found easily on Google Earth.

|
In the larger interest of national security, Advocate Karkhanis has moved the Bombay High Court stating that Google Earth displays satellite images of varying resolution of the Earth's surface, allowing users to visually see things like cities and houses from a bird's eye view. The application is able to show all kinds of images overlaid on the surface of the earth and is also a Web Map Service client.
Karkhanis stated that the Google Earth application might have helped terrorists to study sensitive areas and also provided them with minute details. He urged the court to direct Google to blur images of sensitive locations in the country immediately.
Three years ago, Indian President A P J Abdul Kalam had also voiced similar concerns regarding "sensitive areas clearly marked on Google Earth". He asserted that terrorists and other subversive elements would use these images for their nefarious activities.
The recent Mumbai terror attack, said to be the 9/11 of India, is undoubtedly the biggest and worst terror attack India has faced so far. Now if this does not serve as a wake-up call to the government, then what will?

| Would there be no terrorist attack if Google earth were not there. There are numerous sources for those terrorist. Why don't every common person be conscious and alert so that any terrorist attack is averted. |

| Mr. Amit you have done a daring and great job. The person who criticized you is not aware of the consequences of misuse of technology. You should carry on with your work... |

| Amit Karkhanis is stupid. He got free publicity. A technology can be used or misused, just like a knife, you can cut vegitables or slit someone's throat. So, Mr Amit Karkhanis will you be banning knifes? Just don't misguide people. |
