Saturday, May 02, 2009:
In his last weekly address, President Barack Obama had said, "We cannot meet the challenges of today with old habits and stale thinking. It’s time to fundamentally change the way that we do business in Washington. To help build a new foundation for the 21st century, we need to reform our government so that it is more efficient, more transparent and more creative." He also pledged to "reach beyond the halls of government" to engage the public. Today the White House is taking steps to expand how the administration is communicating with the public, launching pages on social networks MySpace, Facebook and Twitter.

In a blog post titled WhiteHouse 2.0, the White House said, "In addition to WhiteHouse.gov, you can now find us in a number of other spots on the Web: Facebook.com/WhiteHouse, MySpace.com/WhiteHouse and Twitter.com/WhiteHouse."
The White House added, "The WhiteHouse blog (RSS) will power a lot of the content in these networks, but we’re looking forward to hearing from our fans, friends and followers. Don’t forget these sites as well: Flickr.com/WhiteHouse, Vimeo.com/WhiteHouse, YouTube.com/WhiteHouse and iTunes (videos & podcasts). WhiteHouse.gov is an important part of the administration's effort to use the Internet to reach the public quickly and effectively -- but it isn't the only place."
The sites also include the latest information and guidance about the "swine flu" H1N1 virus and will be updated with information on other topics as time goes by.
On Wednesday, the White House posted hundreds of pictures on online photo-sharing service Flickr chronicling President Barack Obama's first 100 days in office. The "official White House photostream" at flickr.com/photos/whitehouse not only features many previously unseen pictures of the President and his family at home but also on trips around the country and abroad.
During his presidential campaign, Barack Obama relied heavily on the Web to reach out to the masses - from organising volunteers to fundraising to communicating. His assets included an impressive 13 million e-mail addresses and two million friends on his social networking site, according to a published data.
Within seconds of his swearing-in on as the 44th President of the United States on 20 January 2009, the White House website was given a facelift, with a series of additions aimed at Internet-savvy Americans.
According to The Associated Press, Macon Phillips, new media director, White House, said the administration would not be able to reply individually to people who send messages via Facebook, MySpace or Twitter. But he said, "People who join these groups can speak to one another, and we can see what they're saying."
Facebook and MySpace combined have about 125 million US users.
