Tuesday, June 23, 2009:
Smartphone manufacturer HTC will unveil India's first Android mobile handset, based on the open source platform for mobile devices, in the Indian market today. HTC is the founding member of the Open Handset Alliance -- a consortium of software, hardware and telecom players devoted to developing the open source platform.
Bharti Airtel will be the exclusive carrier for the device that is likely to be priced at around Rs 25,000, reports The Economic Times.

The device is likely to provide stiff competition to existing smartphone handset cum application offerings such as Apple's iPhone and iTunes App Store as well as Nokia's N97 and Ovi Store. While both companies declined to comment, a spokesperson for Google told ET NOW that "Android is a freely available open-source platform that anybody is free to develop and use without Google's formal involvement."
HTC recently launched the HTC Touch Diamond2 smartphone in India. HTC Touch Diamond2 comes with a price tag of Rs 29,990. This puts the phone close to the 8GB Apple iPhone 3G model. HTC Touch Diamond2 comes equipped with HTC Push Internet technology. The device also comes loaded with HTC TouchFLO 3D interface which is loaded over Windows Mobile OS. HTC Touch Diamond2 has a 3.2-inch widescreen with a 480 x 800 pixel resolution display. In addition, the device also comes with a touch sensitive zoom bar for faster zooming of Web pages. A 5 megapixel digital camera is also included in the phone with auto focus capabilities. The phone also supports technologies like 3G, Wi-Fi, EDGE and Bluetooth with A2DP.
Speaking at the launch, Ajay Sharma, country head, HTC India, had signalled that the company was gearing up to launch more phones in India this year. Ajay, however, refused to divulge whether it would be the second version G-2 or the G-1 version that would be launched here.
According to sources, the company is planning to sell the unlocked G2 Android phone through a large telecom service provider, most likely Airtel.
Ajay had also said, "Since our inception in India, the past two years have proven to be exceptional for HTC in terms of customer acceptance and growth volumes. The whole of South India is an extremely key market for HTC. We have very ambitious plans and would be re-doubling our efforts in terms of investment and number of contact points within the coming year to cater to this very important market."
Android is a software platform for mobile devices, running on the Linux operating system. It was initially developed by Google and later the Open Handset Alliance. By the end of 2009, there will be at least 18 phone models using Android worldwide, according to Google. Owners of Android handset can download and install applications without being tied to single vendor conduit.
