While Japanese electronics maker Toshiba confirmed that such technology was in the works, Sony said there were some cost and technological hurdles that need to be overcome before they can go on sale. Toshiba is expected to start marketing the new TVs by the end of the year, says a report in the Yomiuri newspaper.
“We must take account of pricing before we can think about when to start offering them,” The Press Association quoted Yoshihisa Ishida, SVP, Sony as saying. Sony displayed its latest 3D products including flat-panel TVs and Blu-ray recorders for the Japanese market.
The electronics giant also plans to sell films and music videos in 3D, and home software of 3D theatre releases, in Japan.
According to a report, Sharp Corp. is also planning to launch by March 2011 a smartphone which will make it possible to watch 3D images with the naked eye.
