Microsoft Research will conduct the first workshop in India on the WorldWide Telescope (WWT) – a virtual telescope that is designed to enhance your experience in astronomical research, science education, entertainment and beyond- on September 2&3, 2010. The workshop will be held in Bangalore at the Satish Dhawan Auditorium, Indian Institute of Science, and on the 4th of September in Pune at the IUCAA auditorium, Pune University Campus.
Microsoft Research is co-hosting the workshop with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA). The workshop is free for all participants. The latest versions and solutions of WWT will be presented, and the workshop will also provide a hands-on environment to help new users with the World Wide Telescope. During the workshop the researchers will share their experiences of WWT-based research including connections with the Virtual Observatory and education collaborations worldwide, and also look to learn for future improvements to WWT.
Microsoft has taken some of the best images from the various satellites and telescopes of the world and woven them seamlessly to produce comprehensive view of the universe. WWT looks to aggregate scientific data from major telescopes, observatories, and institutions and make temporal and multi-spectral studies available through a single, cohesive Internet–based portal.
