Thursday, June 09, 2011 ON Semiconductor a premier supplier of high performance silicon solutions for energy efficient electronics has announced the introduction of five ultra small package, low dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulators to bolster its existing portfolio for smart phones and other portable electronics.

Based on complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, the new devices can each deliver an output current of 150 milliamperes (mA).

With an output voltage range of 1.2 volts (V) to 3.3 V, the NCP4682 and NCP4685 ultra low current regulators have a supply current of just 1 microampere (µA) typical. These devices include output current protection and a fully integrated soft-start circuit to minimize inrush current and ensure there is no output voltage overshoot. Output voltage accuracy is ±0.8%. Available packages include a UDFN-4 package measuring only 1 mm x 1 mm x 0.6 mm.

With a ±1.0% output voltage accuracy, the NCP4681 and NCP4684 ultra low current regulators also have a 1 µA typical supply current and are specified over an output voltage range of 0.8 V to 3.6 V. They benefit from the same soft-start and output current protection features as the NCP4682 and NCP4685. Available packages include an XDFN-4 measuring only 0.8 mm x 0.8 mm x 0.4 mm.

The NCP4682 and NCP4681 both include an Enable function to reduce supply current by using a Standby mode. In contrast, the NCP4684 and NCP4685 devices eliminate this function in order to avoid any associated pull down current, thereby lowering the quiescent current for battery-powered portable applications which are required to spend most of the time in an active mode.

The NCP4680 regulator, which completes the group of new LDO products, can operate with an input voltage of only 1.4 V minimum. The device delivers strong transient response with ripple rejection of 75 decibels (dB) and output voltage accuracy of ±1%. Its output voltage range covers 0.8 V to 3.5 V and the available packages include the 0.8 mm x 0.8 mm x 0.4 mm XDFN-4.

All five new devices are highly suitable for incorporation into battery-powered portable devices (such as MP3 players, cell phones, handheld GPS systems, cameras, and camcorders), home appliances (including set top boxes and digital video recorders), and networking/communication equipment (servers and routers), as well as other applications areas where conserving both power and space are high priorities.

“The low supply current required by these LDOs helps to extend the battery life of the end products in which they are employed. In addition, their compact packaging is in line with the sleek, small form factor designs for portable electronics that consumers now demand,” said Mike Paquette, director of the regulation business unit at ON Semiconductor. “These new devices enable more feature-packed portable electronics designs that boast greater battery lives.”

The new devices all have an operational temperature range of −40 ⁰C to 85 ⁰C. The NCP4682 and NCP4685 are now available in SC-70 and UDFN-4 packages. The NCP4681 and NCP4684 are now available in SC-70 and XDFN-4 packages. The NCP4680 is now available in SC-70 and XDFN-4 packages. All five devices can be made available in output voltage increments of 100 mV and in a SOT-23-5 package on request. ON Semiconductor’s new LDO linear voltage regulator devices are priced between USD0.27 and USD0.32 per unit.
