Dries Buytaert and his company are now focusing on India as Drupal can be a big business in the country, just like its popularity across the globe.

Tuesday, November 08, 2011:
There is a demand of hundreds of thousands of trained Drupal developers in India and it can be a serious career option, said Dries Buytaert, founder and project-lead, Drupal. In an exclusive conversation with EFYTimes at the Forum for Open Source Initiatives in India, Buytaert said that India is one of the most potential markets for Drupal to flourish.
Dries, who is on a business trip to India, said, “I am super excited to see the kind of response we are getting. The traction that Drupal has from India is phenomenal. I am delighted to see that there is a demand of hundreds of thousands of Drupal engineers in the country. It's just that we need to prepare to meet the demand.”

His company, Acquia, along with his partners, is looking at bringing some training programmes for Drupal developers to India. Buytaert added, “We have already been conducting some training programmes for the Indian developers. But during my meetings in India, I discovered that those programmes are not enough. We need to introduce more training programmes but that will happen through our partners in the country. I myself plan to keep visiting the country frequently to understand the demand better and to bring in solutions to meet the demand.”
Drupal Can Be A Big Business
Buytaert and his company are now focusing on India because he thinks Drupal can be a big business in the country.
Elaborating on his statement, he said, “Drupal is being used in almost 25 to 30 per cent of the websites in the US. The popularity of this CMS is growing more so because it is possibly one of the rare CMSs where the users are allowed to innovate as much as they can and want. For those who say Drupal hates changes, all I can say is that they have to really understand the skin on it.” And what about those who say Drupal is disorganised? He defends, “That's the beauty of open source. When you say that the platform is open for all, you cannot expect it to be organised because people from all parts of the world work on it day in and day out. Everybody can add their inputs, so how can you expect it to be well documented and organised. That's how the world of open source is...unorganised, yet attractive.”
Drupal In India Will Double Every 6 Months
Buytaert is assured of the growth of his CMS in India. He said, “The number of Drupal developers in India will double every six months and the trend will continue for a while. Drupal's website has the second largest audience in India, which means open source is growing at an awesome pace in the country. India has tremendous potential. All they need is to get organised and share their best practices.”
Any Security Threats... Naah!
When the Obama administration thought of switching over to Drupal, there were questions from all over the world. Security concerns topped the list and criticism flew in from all quarters. But White House stuck to its choice and it has not regretted its decision so far. Buytaert said, "Drupal is as secure as any other content management system. The threats are as much prevalent here as in any other system. I think the problem of security comes in because people do not upgrade themselves. If there is an upgrade available, it is obviously more secure than the previous one. So upgrading the versions is the key word."
An Opportunity For Mumbai Drupal Community
This is a great opportunity to network in Mumbai's Drupal community as Dries Buytaert will hold his session in IIT Bombay tomorrow. It will be a great opportunity for the community to interact with Dries, for customers to seek Drupal help, for Drupal shops to look for new business, for the Drupal-curious to learn and also a great opportunity to hunt for talent.
