Tuesday, November 08, 2011 Acquia, the enterprise guide to Drupal, today announced its plans for the Indian business and software developer community.

Drupal, which has created a buzz around the world had its humble beginning in a dormitory room at the University of Ghent in Belgium, when Dries Buytaert created a message board to communicate with his friends across intranet, where gradually more functionality was added to it. Drupal developed into a free and open source content management system (CMS) for managing the operation of a website and enabling people to build sites, and is now powering more than 2% of all websites.

Since its start in 2008 with Drupal creator Dries Buytaert as one of the co-founders, Acquia has been offering commercial support for enterprise users of Drupal, hosting and providing platform as a service options for Drupal websites, and pre-packaged distributions of Drupal for simplified installation with recommended add-on modules. Acquia Commons 2.0, the latest release of the social software version of Drupal, was released in June to position Acquia as a low cost alternative to social software providers.

Dries Buytaert, Creator of Drupal and Co-Founder of Acquia, said, “ India is a key market for the Drupal ecosystem and I look forward to interacting more closely with our software developer community, partners and clients in India.”

Acquia has made significant progress over the last 12 months with growing revenue of 225% year over year and tripling its customer base from 550 to more than 1,500 in a 12 month period. Acquia grew its partner ecosystem from 220 to more than 300 within last year, adding partners such as VML, Engine Yard, and Alfresco. The company has been financed by over US$38 million from prominent investors including Northbridge, Tenay Capital, and Sigma Partners. It has clients like eBay, Whitehouse.gov, Mozilla, Twitter, Al Jazeera, Turner, World Economic Forum, Stanford University, New York Senate, and NPR.

In India, Acquia has partnered with a number of companies such as Srijan and Azri Solutions to offer its services, including Drupal training, to Indian markets. Acquia is currently accelerating its growth by focusing on global markets to increase its reach, revenues and client base.

Drupal.org has a large community of users and developers, numbering more than 648,000 user accounts and more than 10,000 developer accounts. As of August 2011 there are more than 11,000 free community-contributed addons, known as contrib modules, available to alter and extend Drupal's core capabilities and add new features or customise Drupal's behaviour and appearance.

Acquia has successfully brought to market the following products, services and support to help enterprises more easily and cost effectively use Drupal’s open source social publishing platform:

Acquia Network – Subscription service that provides learning and productivity tools, and support for professionals who build and manage Drupal-based websites. Subscription levels escalate from basic site monitoring to 24x7 enterprise-level support. All subscriptions include site-improvement tools such as Acquia Search, Mobify for mobile interface design, Mollom for automated spam blocking, and New Relic for performance monitoring. Many new services are being added or are in the works for later 2011.

Acquia Commons – Ready-to-use "social as a service" solution to quickly create engaging community websites with more options, better flexibility, and faster time to deployment than any other social software solution in the market. Designed from best practices deployed on thousands of Drupal-based community sites, Acquia Commons has quickly established itself as the open source alternative to expensive proprietary systems. Since its launch last year, Commons has been downloaded 17,000 times and has been quickly adopted by leading technology companies and governments across the world.

Acquia Cloud – Drupal optimized Platform-as-a-Service cloud hosting offering with more than 450 customers and serving more than 4.5 billion http requests per month.

Drupal Gardens – Drupal-as-a-Service platform that makes building and contributing to Drupal websites easier and faster, with a library of site templates and packaged themes. Drupal Gardens sites have grown from 24,000 to over 60,000 within an eight month period.
