Top 10 Most Discussed Topics On Facebook In 2011!  
 
Osama bin Laden became the most discussed topic on Facebook for 2011. On 1 May 2011, almost 10 per cent of all status updates in English mentioned news of his death and what it meant.

Friday, December 09, 2011 Facebook has started sharing the list of what was popular in 2011. The company began the series with the most shared articles of 2011. Users of the social network will be able to track these results in a special tab on the Facebook page called Memology 2011.

Here is a list of top 10 global topics on Facebook in 2011:

1. Death of Osama Bin Laden: Osama bin Laden became the most discussed topic on Facebook for 2011. On 1 May 2011, almost 10 per cent of all status updates in English mentioned news of his death and what it meant.

2. Packers win the Super Bowl: The Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers to win Super Bowl XLV. It was the biggest sports event of the year (on Facebook at least).

3. Casey Anthony found not guilty: This was about the trial of Casey Anthony, a Florida woman who was accused of murdering her daughter Caylee Anthony. Status updates mentioning Caylee Anthony peaked on 5 July 2011, the day her mother was acquitted.

4. Charlie Sheen: Charlie Sheen and his antics were discussed a lot in March, when his trademark memes (winning, tiger blood, and goddesses) took off and scams using his name started to float.

5. Death of Steve Jobs: Death of Apple’ co-founder was mourned all around the globe. Facebook was the biggest witness of the grief.

6. The Royal Wedding: All eyes were on the marriage of Kate Middleton and Prince William, when they exchanged vows in April this year. Mentions of the phrase Royal Wedding increased nearly 600-fold in the days running up to their wedding day.

7. Death of Amy Winehouse: Amy Winehouse’s death saw a lot of outpouring of sadness in June.

8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: The launch of this video game was the biggest headline. It was seen as the biggest entertainment launch of all time.

9. Military operations begin in Libya: The United Nations military operations started in Libya in March that prompted an increase in status updates that mentioned Libya and Gaddafi. Later, Libya’s government blocked access to Facebook and various news websites.

10. Hurricane Irene: In August, the Facebook users talked about Hurricane Irene that struck the east coast of the US. Americans relied on Facebook’s platform to get the emergency warnings. The rest of the world used the social network to know the well-being of their family and friends.
