Wednesday, February 08, 2012:
Amid the tiff between IIT-Rajasthan and Aakash-maker DataWind, Suneet Singh Tuli might not be losing sleep but the payment of 10,000 ultra cheap Aakash tablets are still due.
The London-based company is undergoing negotiation and still awaiting payment for the first lot of Aakash tablet that it manufactured for India's public school system. However, DataWind now says that it has become the victim of corruption.
On the other hand, the Indian Institute of Technology - Rajasthan remains stiff on the first set of Aakash tablets that arrived there. They initially rejected 3,000 Aakash Units as the tablet doesn't perform up to their expectations.

It all started with the Indian government's commitment to do a test run of 100,000 tablets by DataWind, which were later planned to be sold to students in public schools. When the first lot of the tender got supplied, the IIT-Rajasthan backtracked and demanded that the tablets should be rainproof and able to withstand shocks.
However, DataWind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli said that these test criteria certainly weren't part of the first or the next tender process. At the same time, he underlined that it is not possible for such a low-cost device, reports The Gazette.
"The IIT has introduced all these test criteria after the fact that certainly aren't part of the next tender process or even the last tender process," Tuli said. "We're now trying to find an amicable resolution for both parties and we’re confident we'll get paid for them. This is not something I lose sleep over," added Tuli.
Even though the payment for the first Aakash lot is pending, another tender for 1 million to 2 million tablets is expected to be held in the next few weeks and Tuli said he expects his company will win that one too.
Meanwhile, Tuli expects the issue with the test criteria to be resolved in the next few weeks.
