Coming 28 April will be an important event for the Wikipedia community in India. The Malayalam Wikipedia community is organising the first ever Wikipedia conference for an Indic language in Kollam, Kerala on 28-29 April, 2012. The conference is called 'WikiSamgamothsavam', which translates to “Wiki community celebration”.
As many as 250 participants from Kerala and other states are likely to attend the event. This would include 50 school children as well. Kannan Shanmugam, general covenor, Wiki Sangamolsavam organising committee, said, "The WikiSamgamotsavam 2012 is the annual meet-up of Malayalam Wikimedians. It is meant to provide a common platform for all Malayalam Wikimedians to meet and share their views, discuss challenges, and exchange useful tips, best practices and other information. The conference is being hosted by Kollam Wikimedians. The event seeks to celebrate the achievements of the Malayalam community, plan new projects as a community and welcome more Malayalees to the community. E-malayalam, free and open knowledge, copyright and cyber-freedom are the highlights of the conference this year."

It is worth mentioning here that Malyalam Wikipedia has more than 23,000 articles (as of April, 2012) and gets around 25,00,000 page views per month. There are 20 other Indic language Wikipedias, which are active including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Nepali, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. The Malayalam community is one of India's biggest communities.
The event will comprise around 30 sessions including how teachers can use Wikipedia, ways to improve articles on Kerala's history, and digitising literature.
"There is a workshop planned for the general public interested in learning how to write on Malayalam Wikipedia as well as a conference for school children," adds Anoop Narayanan, a Bengaluru-based engineer and a member of the organising committee.
