Sunday, May 06, 2012:
You have been using your fingers to operate your phone, where, in some cases it even detects your finger print. Well, this is normal. But imagine, right from your doorknob to your favourite chair in the room, everything knew your touch. And not only that, it could also tell the way you are touching it or if you are touching it using another object. This could all be true if a team working at Disney Research and Carnegie Mellon University continues to make progress. This much for sensitive technology!

The technology that researchers are using for this is called Touché. It could even make a flat surface determine if you are standing or sitting. The technology works on the same principle as your touchscreen, with the only difference being that it can sense complex configurations by sweeping over a wider range of frequencies. According to a Venture Beat report, the technique is called swept frequency capacitive sensing (SFCS), and it requires processing a much larger amount of information than traditional capacitive sensors — something that has become easier with today’s faster and cheaper microprocessors. The technology needs only one electrode, which opens the applications to almost any object that can conduct electricity. That means humans can become a sensor and, even cooler, the different parts of a body could be detected based on their capacitive properties. Even water can be turned into a touch sensor.
The researchers have already seen success in various concepts: they have devised a music player that’s controlled by touching your own hand; doorknobs that lock, trigger lights, or display messages based on how you touch them; a sofa that turns on the TV when you sit down, then turns down the lights when you recline to name a few.
