Sunday, May 06, 2012 Tablets are surely the flavour of the season. For an open source enthusiast, what better than a fully open tablet. We are talking about the Vivaldi Linux Tablet, which was earlier known as ‘Spark’. The tablet is priced at $265 and will be shipped soon.

‘Vivaldi’ was able to create enough ‘Spark’ when it was announced earlier this year. Some online reports suggest that the device is now ready for shipping. To add to the delight of open source fans, the makers of the tablet have upgraded the RAM from 512 MB to 1 GB. So for those, who have placed an order for 512 MB version of the device, will have a better configuration in store.

KDE developer, Aaron Seigo wrote in a blog post: "After another long 'getting the details sorted' session on the phone with our manufacturing partner this morning, it looks like I'll be able to sign the purchase order sometime next week so that the first shipments of Vivaldi tablets can be put together."

The device is powered by a 1 GHz AMLogic CPU with Mali 400 graphics and features a 17.8-cm (7-inch) capacitive multitouch display. It is not the hardware but its software that sets the tablet apart from the entire gamut of tablet devices currently available in the market. The reason is that unlike Google’s Android, KDE Plasma Active is a community-driven free software platform. For all those who are not interested in developing the software, the development team is making the device as usable as possible. The tablet will feature a content store, which will allow the users to download free/paid apps and digital books from Project Gutenberg.

The Plasma Active development team has been working to develop this tablet-friendly software for a long time. This touch-friendly version of the software was first showcased in last April. The team was giving a pretty functional demo of Plasma Active on tablet hardware by October. The customisable tablet is sold under the ‘Make-Play-Live’ brand and is priced initially at 200 euros, or roughly $265.

Do you wish to order one for yourself? Well, all you need to do is to enter your information on the Make-Play-Live site and the KDE team will let you know about its availability around you. Do let us know if the specs of this one impresses you or if you would rather prefer an Android tab?
