No Software Company Can Do Without Open Source Technology: Pitney Bowes

Pitney Bowes is coming up with a new facility in Pune, for which the company will hire professionals with open source exposure.

This goes out to all those in the software business who think they can manage without open source technology in the modern day world. Some of the top executives in the industry are of the opinion that even one single vendor in the industry cannot do without open source technology today.
Ashish Singh, director of product development, Pitney Bowes is one of the people who can bank on open source technology in many cases. Talking about the consumption of open source technologies in his company, Singh said, “We consume a lot of open source libraries. Java is open source and that is definitely a key platform stack. We have the same take on open source like other major software product players.”

Open source technologies are much associated with insecurities because of their open nature. But for Pitney Bowes, the perspective is a bit different. Singh clarified, “Fear of security cannot be generalised. It depends what you are using, Java is open source and I don't know of a single software vendor that doesn't use Java. I think I would say it is a case by case basis. There are some really good open source technologies, software libraries which are pretty much of industry standard. There may be some that are not so good. So, one has to really be sure of what he is using and for what purpose.”
Pitney Bowes is coming up with a new facility in Pune, for which the company will hire professionals with open source exposure. Singh said, “We will hire people who have worked with software product development, who can build highly scalable consumer Internet applications and can work across different technology stack like different mobile platforms, Java platforms, .Net platforms. Open source technology is something that we will pay much attention on.” The Pune facility of the company will be operative in the first week of June.
