Friday, May 25, 2012 As we close in on Windows 8 operating system, Microsoft is changing a lot at the moment--the latest (big) change being with its free Visual Studio 11 Express suite. Microsoft announced last week its product lineup for Visual Studio 11 (the free-to-use version of its integrated development environment) and open source developers note that the software giant won't allow developers to use the free version of Visual Studio Express 11 to develop apps for the desktop in Windows 8.

In other words, the company will be removing support for creating anything but Metro-native apps.

Free Development Tools, Windows 8

Microsoft insists that "developers for desktop applications use the professional version of the software, while developers using the free version of the software will only be able to create Metro-style apps or content for the Web," PC Pro said in a report.

At present, many developers create apps with Visual Studio Express 2010 which offers a full and free compiler. But in the future, they will have to buy the full version of Visual Studio 11 in order to write fully desktop-enabled Windows 8 applications. And the estimated retail price will be $499 (£318).

"Visual Studio 11 Express for Windows 8 provides tools for Metro style app development. To create desktop applications, developers need to use Visual Studio 11 Professional, or higher. In addition, Visual Studio 2010 Express products—Visual Basic 2010 Express, Visual C++ 2010 Express, and Visual C# 2010 Express—will remain available for free download," Microsoft said on its site for the beta versions of the products.
