At a seminar on 'e-Governance through m-governance in PSUs', organised by PHD Chamber in Delhi yesterday, Rita Teaotia, additional secretary, e-Governance, DeitY, Government of India said, “Citizens can avail all non-emergency services or get information from various government departments, including the Election Commission, health and social welfare departments easily by dialing 166.” Teaotia further added that the government has set up committee to push e-governance at gram panchayat level also.
According to the major recommendations of the Mobile Governance Policy, websites of all government departments and agencies have to be made mobile-complaint by using the 'One Web' approach. Also, all government departments have to develop mobile apps for providing their public services through mobile devices.

“Very soon, we will transfer all 51969 services to a short number 166, which is easy to remember. An open standard shall be adopted for all mobile applications as mentioned in the framework for Mobile Governance notified in February 2012,” said Dr. Rajendra Kumar, joint secretary, e-governance, DeitY, Government of India.
“There is a huge potential for empowerment through mobile governance. Mobile is ideal for government services as they help in bridging the last mile gap and a huge upfront investment is not required, thus, making it ideal for rural areas. Current penetration of Broadband penetration is only 13.79 million, whereas for mobiles its 919.17 million with 35.17 per cent of the total in rural areas. By the end of 2012, mobile subscription is projected to grow to 1 billion in India,” added Kumar.
