Tuesday, July 03, 2012:
Kobian announced the launch of its latest Mercury mTab Rio tablet on Monday. The tablet sports a 24.6-cm (9.7-inch) wide in-plane switching (IPS) display and is powered by 1.2GHz processor. mTab Rio runs the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, has 1GB DDR3 memory, 8GB internal storage memory and supports 32GB extendable memory through MicroSD card. The IPS display is a liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, which was initially developed to correct the poor viewing angles and colour problems with LCDs earlier.

The latest tablet from Kobian's stable has been priced at Rs 11,999 at a times when there are many tablets available in the Indian market in sub-Rs 10K range. Sushmita Das, country manager – India, Kobian Pte Ltd, said, “The market has 17.8-cm (7 inch) tablets at Rs 10k wherein mTab Rio is a 24.6-cm (9.7-inch) IPS Panel – Super wide view screen tablet. This is a product which is suitable for all types of users, students, office goers, family and people on the move.”
The tablet supports Wi-Fi and provides a battery backup of 6 to 8 hours to consumers. mTab Rio sports a built-in 2.0 MP primary camera and 300K secondary camera for video chat. The tablet supports Adobe Flash 11 too. It also allows easy connectivity to 3G through USB interface and offers a high HDMI output. It is not yet clear if it will be upgradable to Android 4.1 Jelly bean operating system.
Kobian entered the tablet market in the third quarter last year with its Mercury brand. Since then, it has launched four tablets in the Indian market – mTab, mTab 2, mTab Neo and mTab Neo 2 – and now the mTab Rio is its latest entry into the market. With five tablets in its kitty in less than a year’s time, Mercury is looking at selling between 2 and 2.5 lakh units of tablets in this financial year apart from projects. Talking about market share, Das said, “The market size for tablets is yet not defined, so mentioning market share shall not be right. This is a very fast growing market and the size and share is changing every day.”
Despite the market being flooded with so many low-cost tablets of late, Das denies any threat or competition with the low-cost tablets. “Low cost tablets lack so many features that there can be no comparison drawn with them. mTab Rio is one of the first IPS panel model in India and users shall understand the difference in quality and performance,” said Das.
The mTab Rio will be available in the markets from the third week of July.
