Thursday, July 05, 2012:
Makers of the BlackBerry smartphone, Research In Motion (RIM), confirmed at the BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour held yesterday at New Delhi that the BlackBerry operating system will not be open sourced and all rumours regarding RIM open sourcing its native OS should not be paid much attention. “We are categorically saying NO. We are not going to open source BlackBerry,” said Alec Saunders, vice president, developer relations, RIM.
Speaking exclusively to EFYTimes.com, Saunders said, “We are a huge supporter of the Open Source Community. We are very friendly with open source developers and have ported many open source projects to the BlackBerry 10 platform both in the smartphone and the PlayBook tablet arena but that doesn't mean that RIM is planning to open source BlackBerry.”

|
When we asked the reason for not open sourcing BlackBerry OS, Saunders replied, “We have made huge investments in intellectual property for the BlackBerry platform and also the BlackBerry 10 operating system. So far, the strategy of open sourcing platforms hasn't worked very well for our competitors. We are continuing to believe that intellectual property has more value and with that we believe we will continue to deliver better products each day.”
It's noteworthy to mention here that RIM and Apple are the only companies that make their smartphones and have their mobile operating systems. Samsung makes a few phones on its Bada platform, but mostly makes phones on Android and Windows Phone too. Android is an open operating system and that might be the biggest reason for its popularity.
