Wednesday, July 11, 2012 The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced a programming competition for children and teenagers with a $1000 grand prize. Prizes will be given to the children who have written the best software for the Raspberry Pi--a small, programmable computer built around the processors in mobile phones.

The contest has two age categories - 13-and-under, and 14-to-18. The first competition, which runs for two months until 1 September 2012, offers $4,000 total in prize money. It will be divided between the six best entries in each category. In each category, the winners will be awarded with $1,000 cash prize and up to five runners-up will be given $200. "These are the first steps in the Foundation's plan to return the bulk of the profit from selling units to young people in the form of prizes and other incentives," said Eben Upton, executive director of Raspberry Pi Foundation.

The contest, according to the Foundation, is being scheduled over the summer in order to cover as much of the holidays in countries in the northern hemisphere as possible.

Participants who do not have a Raspberry Pi "can still enter – just use one of the publicly available emulator platforms," Upton said. As per the rules of the contest, the goal is to "impress the judges with a piece of software you’ve written for the Raspberry Pi".

In the future, the Foundation plans to run weekly contests.

How To Enter

The aim of the contest is simply to produce a software Application, which runs on the Raspberry Pi computer and which impresses the Judges. Each Entry consists of an Entry Form and an archive file containing all source code, binaries and data for the Application. To enter, visit www.raspberrypi.org on or after 4 August 2012; complete an Entry Form with the required information and submit along with your archive file.
