Know Why Dell Chose Ubuntu For Its Developer Laptop!

On whether developers and Ubuntu go together, the answer is a definitive yes, said Jane Silber, chief executive officer, Canonical.

Thursday, July 19, 2012 Dell has announced its plan to launch Ubuntu pre-loaded laptop for developers in fall this year. Originally a six-month exploratory pilot to create an Ubuntu -based developer laptop, Dell is taking Project Sputnik from pilot to product this fall. The company plans to deliver an official developer laptop based on the Dell XPS 13 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS preloaded. The laptop will be available in select geographies. Made possible by an internal innovation fund, the system will offer developers a complete client-to-cloud solution. The included software will allow developers to create 'microclouds' on their laptops, simulating a proper, at-scale environment, and then deploy that environment seamlessly to the cloud.

Ubuntu, Developer

One major question that comes up with regard to the project is why Dell chose Ubuntu and not any other operating system. We discussed the project with Ubuntu maker and Canonical's chief. Discussing this project exclusively with EFYTimes.com, Jane Silber, chief executive officer, Canonical, said, “Dell chose Ubuntu because it is a natural fit for the developers. There was a survey done recently by the Eclipse Foundation about which operating system developers prefer to use. Windows was first but Ubuntu was a very strong second. We know that Ubuntu appeals to the developers. Much of our enterprise use is on developer workstations and much of our server use comes from the fact the developers are actually using it. If you ask, for us, developers and Ubuntu go together.”

Nnamdi Orakwue, executive sponsor of the Dell incubation program and executive assistant to Michael Dell said in a press release, “This project represents the first of many new ideas Dell employees will test with customers or partners through the program, and we look forward to supporting Sputnik to be successful as it becomes a product this fall."

"Since we announced project Sputnik a little over two months ago, we have continued to be amazed by the amount and quality of interest and input we have received," said Barton George, project Sputnik lead and director, Dell's Web vertical marketing. "By listening to developers, Dell can provide them with solutions and products to help make them more productive and allow for greater innovation."

Please let us know if developers really need such a laptop?
