Last week was a bag of mixed offerings for the open source world in India. While there were a few exciting launches like Micromax's FunBook Pro, there was a sad news, which affected the Indian open source community. 1. "Almost Every Android Device Is Malware Infected" : If you are an Android device user, you may in deep trouble, warns British Telecom. BT has come up with some eyebrow-raising statements about Android operating system. Android malware is an issue for sure, but a security expert from BT has said that it is an epidemic, which is affecting everyone. Speaking at the NetEvents Americas conference, Jill Knesek, head of the global security practice at BT, said, “The company has analysed over 1,000 Android applications and the findings were rather shocking. We found that around one-third of the apps were compromised with some form of active or dormant malware. The team has found that almost every device is compromised with some kind of malware. Red Hat, Canonical 'Traitors' To Open Source: OpenBSD Founder : In an interview with ITWire, Theo de Raadt, the founder of the OpenBSD project and a prominent figure in the Open Source world called Linux giants, Red Hat and Canonical as ‘traitors’ for working with Microsoft's secure boot system. "I fully understand that Red Hat and Canonical won't be doing the right thing, they are traitors to the cause, mostly in it for the money and power. They want to be the new Microsoft," de Raadt told ITWire. "I sense that disaster is coming, and hope that someone has the moral strength to do the right thing," de Raadt told ITWire. Similarly, Richard Stallman also referred to UEFI as a "disaster" in a recent interview with Bytes Media, saying that the practice amounts to "abuse of the users. I think it ought to be illegal." Red Hat recently announced the expansion and launch of two ‘Engineering Centres of Excellence’ in Bengaluru and Pune.
