Last week was super exciting for the open source world in India. India is seeing a surge in Android use with every passing day. Android, the open source mobile operating system is clearly ruling our hearts and that's the reason why companies are launching Android tablets one after the other. Last week saw the launch of a couple of Android tablets. An all-new distro called Bedrock Linux emerged and awed the users. Here is a wrap-up of the happenings in the world of open source last week. Five Samsung Devices Sure To Get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update Soon! - Korean smartphone maker, Samsung has been tight-lipped about its devices getting Google's latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean upgrade. But industry experts see it as an effort of trying to tease the users who are waiting for the much anticipated update. Sources reveal that the update is likely to arrive before the end of this year. 2. Here Comes Gertboard Expansion For Raspberry Pi! - If you want to make your Raspberry Pi a powerful device and make use of it beyond a PC, Gertboard has come for your assistance. With Gertboard, you can use Raspberry Pi as the brain of a robot, digital signage system or forany of such tasks. The credit-card sized PC is powered by a 700 MHz ARM111 processor and comes with 256MB of memory and an SD card slot for storage. It can run a desktop Linux-based operating system and users can connect it to a keyboard, mouse, Ethernet cable, and monitor to make it a full-fledged PC. Read more >>>
4. Bedrock Linux Offers Benefits Of Other Linux Distributions Together! - This goes out to all the open source lovers. A new Linux distribution called 'Bedrock Linux' is in town. The makers claim to have created it “with the aim of making most of the (often seemingly mutually-exclusive) benefits of various other Linux distributions available simultaneously and transparently.” The developers of the distribution explain the benefits of it saying, “If one would like a rock-solid stable base (for example, from Debian or a RHEL clone), still have easy access to cutting-edge packages (from, say, Arch Linux), automate compiling packages with Gentoo's portage, and ensure that software aimed only for the ever popular Ubuntu will run smoothly - all at the same time, in the same distribution - Bedrock Linux will provide a means to achieve this.” Read more
6. Wtab 7.2 Android ICS Tablet @ Rs 4,899 - Here comes another addition to the Android Ice Cream Sandwich family of tablets. India-based Champion Computers Pvt Ltd has announced its first Android tablet named Wtab 7.2. The tablet sports a 18.29-cm (7.2-inch) display and is priced at Rs 4,899. Read more
8. World's First NFC Keyboard For Android Smartphones - Japanese electronics company Elecom has come up with an NFC-enabled portable keyboard which is designed for the Android smartphones. It uses the radio frequency of 13.56MHz band and can be used by Android phone users at a distance of about 10mm. Once the initial software installation and configuration is completed, the user just needs to place his NFC-enabled Android device onto the space in the middle of the keyboard and start typing. An Android Tablet That Can Read Your Handwriting! - Almost every gadget manufacturer is trying its luck in the growing Android tablet market by cutting down either price or by stressing on the point that its tablet is `different'. Now, Casio has unveiled four different models, all offering very similar specs, but two of the four are what Casio is calling its Paper Writer tablets, which actually have a unique selling point. It can read your handwriting!
