Monday, January 07, 2013 Way back in March 2012, Valve was reported to be working on a set top box to compete with consoles, dubbed the Steam Box. According to a report on a German tech site Golem.de, Valve will unveil its Steam Box in 2013. Ben Krasnow, an engineer at Valve, confirmed that the Steam Box will run on Linux as well.

Valve's Steam Box is expected to be based on an Intel Core i7 CPU along with an NVIDIA GPU and 8GB of RAM. Alienware X51 might be a nice pick as it may have been designed to be a Steam Box-capable device.

In another instance, Valve is prepping up to release Steam for Linux very soon officially and has already begun with listing of the minimum Linux system requirements for games that are available on Steam for Linux. According to OMG Ubuntu, the system requirements stated support almost all of Steam's first-party titles. On the hardware front, users would need at least 512 MB of RAM along with a 2GHz processor. The supported Linux distributions as of now are Ubuntu 12.0.4 LTS, Mint 13 LTS, Fedora 16.

The company is working at a good pace to launch Steam for Linux. Steam's Linux beta program appears to be gathering even more steam with the project being opened up for public after two months of its closed launch. Back in September, the company had announced its plans to bring Steam on Linux. Further, the company opened up the beta version of 'Steam for Linux' for 1000 'experienced' Linux users in October. Now the gates are open for the entire public to enjoy Steam for Linux in its beta phase.
