More Than Half PC Users Run Pirated Software

Despite all the brouhaha over banning use of pirated software, a recent report revealed that more than half of all PC users across the globe run pirated software. The report was a part of a recent study by Business Software Alliance. According to a Tech 2 report, the survey was carried over a sample of some 15,000 computers in 33 different countries. Interviews were taken early this year and some startling responses were received.

Facebook May Allow Kids Under 13 To Join The Site

Facebook may lift the ban on children under 13 and may allow them to join the social networking site. The move is being anticipated as the social networking giant has discovered that under-aged kids are already using the social network; some of them do that with their parents' permission. According to a TOI report, Simon Milner, head of policy at Facebook, said, “There is reputable evidence that there are kids under 13 who are lying about their age to get on to Facebook. Some seem to be doing it with their parents' permission and help.” If the ban is lifted, Facebook may see a steep rise in the number of users of the social network.

Facebook Acquires Karma

It seems like the popular social network now aims to get into gift giving as well! Fresh off its first day on the Nasdaq, Facebook has acquired a gift giving start-up, called Karma. Using the service, you can send everything from a bottle of wine to a teddy bear to your friend via SMS, e-mail, and Facebook. Announcing the acquisition, Karma said in a blog post, "We're thrilled to announce that Karma has been acquired by Facebook. The service that Karma provides will continue to operate in full force. By combining the incredible passion of our community with Facebook's platform we can delight users in new and meaningful ways." [Via Tech2]

Android Malware Quadrupled In 2011

While Android users are increasing in numbers, so are malware created for the Google platform. According to a recent Mobile Threat Report Q12012 by the security firm, F-Secure has released a report that states the malware targeting Android users have quadrupled since 2011. The report even shows that about 10 Android malware families have come to the forefront in 2011, while the number has increased to 37 families in the first quarter of 2012. This clearly shows a year over year growth of a staggering 270 percent. [Via Tech2]

Twitter With Mozilla Helps You Ditch Tracking!

Twitter has finally announced the ‘do not track’ policy during a privacy panel at The New York Internet Week. The news was first confirmed by the Federal Trade Commission CTO, Ed Felten and later authenticated by both Twitter and Mozilla. This service has been added to the Firefox's Do Not Track feature. So far, it used to only remember your recent searches but now you have an option of permanently tagging important places. The updated Web version lets you define location that will be attached to your Google activity. So regardless of how many PCs you change, it will still remember you. Twitter recently acquired Summify and without wasting much time it has put it to use. According to an Engadget report, you can now opt to get a curated summary of the "most relevant Tweets" and linked stories sent to your e-mail inbox. The layout borrows more than a few cues from the new Discover tab and will let you respond from the e-mail message itself. While it may seem as a useful tool to many, some may get irked by the thought of reviving a conversation that was done days ago.

Planning to the buy the new iPad with Wi-Fi + 4G? Well, you might want to know that it is no more called that! The company has silently changed its name across all retail stores to Wi-Fi + Cellular. This was noticed in a number of retail stores in US, UK, Australia, Canada and some of the stores in Asia. London Mozilla Space Launched

Mozilla Spaces has announced the London Mozilla Space. The new space, located near Covent Garden, comprises six meeting rooms, a larger meeting area with a "Splendid Bar", Wi-Fi, and a space for storing bicycles. Tristan Nitot, president of Mozilla Europe, told The H: "The idea of an open space from Mozilla was that everybody who needs a meeting space to do something creative about the open Web and to have a few meetings to talk about things can have one, without being encumbered by a company having them sign an NDA to get into their offices."

Wi-Fi Hotspots In London Phone Boxes

The iconic London phone booths that have been around for ages are not so old, technically. Spectrum Interactive has come up with a solution that does not only ensure its maintenance but provides customers in search of Internet a free ticket online. According to an Engadget report, the company has converted some 1,800 pay phones throughout London into WiFi hotspots, offering passersby a free connection so long as they provide their mobile numbers and download an e-coupon for a nearby store. The company tested the first lot with Nokia has now lost the company’s support.

US Military Approves Use Of BlackBerry 7 Smartphones

Canadian company Research In Motion (RIM) has announced the US Department of Defense (DoD) approval for the use of BlackBerry 7 smartphones. The approval allows all DoD customers to use BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 (touch screen with keyboard), BlackBerry Torch 9810 (touch screen with slide out keyboard), BlackBerry Torch 9850 and 9860 (full screen touch screen) and BlackBerry Curve 9360 (keyboard) on DoD networks. Though army and other defence department personnel have been using BlackBerry phones for long, each new version of the device must undergo successful testing through Army labs for use in sensitive roles where a data breach could endanger national security. Google Maps For Android Integrates Google Offers

Google just updated its Android application for Google Maps and has added a slew of interesting features. The three add-ons include: integration with Google Offers, support for Google Business Photos and indoor walking directions. The integration of Google Offers will let users view the latest offers that any nearby store is running. These offers will include both free and paid offers. K9 Web Protection Browser For Your Android Device!

Blue Coat Systems has announced the immediate availability of its K9 Web Protection Browser for Android for all Android mobile devices in India. Available free of charge from the Google Play market, the application is aimed at protecting individuals and families from malicious threats on mobile phones and tablets. Ambarish Deshpande, managing director for India sales, Blue Coat Systems, said, “The move is part of the company’s vision to offer free and safe Internet access on mobile phones and tablets. Unlike home computers, mobile devices lacked basic protection against Web-based threats, which exposes consumers to threats such as malware and phishing. This lack of protection is particularly concerning, given the risky behaviour displayed by consumers when they engage with their mobile devices.”

New iPad Coming To 30 More Countries This Weekend!

Apple will be launching its new iPad in 13 new countries in Latin America this Friday. In addition, Apple's country-specific store pages reveals that this weekend's launch (on 11 and 12 May 2012) will include a total of 30 countries. The Cupertino giant quietly launched the new device in Turkey on 5 May, and following this weekend's launches the iPad will be available in nearly 90 countries on this planet. The device is reportedly awaiting certification before Apple can start selling it in China, Honduras, Indonesia, Nicaragua, Paraguay, and the Philippines. [Via Engadget]

Aliens Streaming Music Via Spotify?

A crop circle appeared close to Stonehenge in England, which looked quite similar to the music streaming website’s logo- Spotify. The start-up refuses anything to do with the formation in the canola seed field. According to Tech Crunch, the crop circle appeared on 28 April, according to the Wiltshire Times, who failed to recognise the similarity. This must have come as a shocking revelation to Sirius XM satellite radio who have been beaming music into space for years.

37 Per Cent US Teens Video Chat

When it comes to communication with each other, US teens prefer the video way- so suggests a new study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project. The data reveals that 37 per cent teens regularly use Skype, Apple’s iChat or other start-up services to stay in touch with peers. But there is a difference between genders too. While only a third of boys use video chat, 42 per cent girls say they have video chatted. Android 4.0 In 4.9 Per Cent Of Devices Only

Google's latest Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich has become a rage but very few Android devices have actually received the upgrade so far. According to the latest data compiled by Google, Android 4.0 is still scarce, as it runs on 4.9 per cent of the Android devices so far. Android's Gingerbread version remains the dominant version, which runs on around two-thirds of the devices. An Information Week report has cited several reasons for this low presence of the latest Android. Having said that, one cannot ignore the fact that almost all Android OEMs are pushing Android 4.0 upgrade on their devices, which is sure to increase the market share of Android 4.0.

Google Docs Updated With Fonts, Templates

Google announced releasing Web fonts to Google Docs, which means users have access to 450 fonts for their documents. And this is not it. The search giant also announced adding over 60 new templates to its template gallery over the last month, improved support for screen readers in Docs and also added more options for inserting images into documents, including support for Google Drive and webcams. Android Enjoys 51 Per Cent Market Share: ComScore

Here is a report that seems to authenticate the popularity of Google’e operating system. According to a quarterly report from ComScore, Android has finally captured almost 51 per cent of the market share, which is up by 3.7 per cent since December last year. Android’s growth continues to come at the expense of RIM and Microsoft, who saw declines of 3.7 per cent and 0.8 per cent respectively. Apple’s iOS gained just over 1 per cent to make up 30.7 per cent of the US market. 403 Million Malware Strings Found In 2011: Report

In an interesting find from Symantec, almost 403 million malware strings were found in the year 2011. The number of attacks went up by 41 per cent last year, making it the year of hack! “It’s really the automation and tool-kits that these folks are using,” Symantec project manager John Harrison told VentureBeat. “I think we’re finding we’re not just up against a couple individuals — it’s more and more folks who are doing this. And they’re doing it primarily for financial reasons.”

Angry Birds Space Downloaded 50 Million Times

Rovio has every reason to celebrate and they went on to share the good news on Twitter. The company declared on the microblogging site that its latest Angry Birds installment, Angry Birds Space, was downloaded 50 million times in 35 days. This also makes Angry Birds Space the fastest growing mobile game ever seen. The Space version of the game was launched on 22 March and it has enjoyed much fanfare since then.
